I have found out that it has to do with the shift system. Where do I start? It is under warranty but I still am curious what/how to check system.

Code #12 is a gear shift position system code .. Check your gearshift switch coupler for water & to be sure it is connected tight .. The tests for the gear position switch should be done at the ECM 33p connector ..
where it is under warranty it should be taken to your dealer ,but if you want to check these yourself..
