the sure fire sign that your valve adjustment needs attention will be a distinct "ticking" sound coming from your engine. as to the frequency, i'm a firm believer that even if you don't hear the sound it should be checked annually. but atv engines are all different. my 2003 ranchers have never needed any adjustment. my 2005 foreman needed to be adjusted after about 10 hours.

The valves should be checked after 10-15 hours when new ..After that they should be checked once a year depending on how many miles the bike is driven .. But most people don't ..
