Valves adjustments .006 or better .005?

Hi guys,

I have adjusted my valves like they have saying in my service manual and still when hot, the making noises??

It is written that the need to be at .006 and a slith drap on the feeder gauge ???

I have spoken to one of my friend that is a mechanic and told im that I have read that some of you guys here have being adjusting them at .005 and where not hearing them at all after. Then he told me that adjusting them too tight that it would burn the valves!

And I should check that ther are on specs and leave it like that.

Any suggestions of you guys?

When I adjusted mine at 20 hours I checked them before adjusting them.I was surprised,I couldn't get a .004" feeler gauge in there.They were that tight from the factory.I set them at .006" and wasn't happy,way too noisey.So I re-adjusted them to a tight .005"..,much better now.
I always adjust mine a little on the tight side, I dont see how it would lead to burning up valves.

A valve to tight will not seat and cause contaminates and extreme heat to enter into the seat during combustion. this will build up after a while and the valve will not seat properly and it also bad for guides and seals. It can also cause compression to drop due to seepage at the seat
the specs at .004 when first checked is usually due to the valves getting set into the valve seat after some break in wear.leave them at .006 that is a pretty close tolerance for a valve actually.remember most chevy v-8's running a mechanical roller cam are in the .016-.024 range so .006 is darn close.a human hair is .003.
