TDC Question

I went to adjust my valves, located the TDC mark on crank but there was no index mark on the crankcase. I could not get any slack in the rockers…even when I rotated 360 degrees…. Many times. This is for the 20 hour valve check…and I have the 4 year warranty so I am not so keen in taking a chance on the valves. Any suggestions? This is an 05 Foreman.

Turn the engine over by slowly pulling on the pull starter while watching the intake valve ..When the intake valve opens and starts to close watch for the index mark on the flywheel ..when you see the index "T" mark thru the inspection hole it should be at TDC ..
Thanks for the reply Honda mechanic. I know just enough to be dangerous ( ! ) but I want to be sure. Can you identity which valve is the intake valve (front or rear?)

Thanks again!
The rear valve is intake .. it is closest to the carb .. the valve closest to the front of the bike next to the exhaust header is the exhaust ..

I plan on adjusting the valves on my 500 myslef. I am wondering what will happen if it takes multiple attempts to find the TDC? Will it flood the carb?
Manually turning the motor over will not flood the carb. You will have the fuel tank off anyway. (Although you do not have to disconnect the lines you should shut the fuel off.)
I adjusted the valves on my 500 at 25 hours and they were tight also.I couldn't get a .004" in there.I set them to the recommended .006" and ran it for a while and it was too noisey.I re-adjusted them to a snug .005".Here's a question for HONDAMECHANIC:Have you run into this before;Tight valve adjustment from the factory or does the valve seat-in that much during break-in causing tight valve lash?
