it is there for extra protection of the rope end. just spool the rope up loose and you shouldn't have any problems with the rope bunching up.
synthetic rope?
I just installed a viper winch with a synthetic rope. There is a rock guard along the first 4 feet. The guard keeps getting bunched up as I reel in. Should I just remove the rope or is there a reason not to?

I ran into the same problem with my warn rope, being such a pain i cut the sleeve off and have yet to have a problem with it.
I'm not running mine either. Just be carefull when winching around sharp stuff.
