I'm new to this forum and would appreciate any help. I just got my new 500 Foreman and I love it. But this problem is with my 2001 Manual shift Rancher that I want to sell. Every time I shut the motor off, I here what sounds like something winding down to a stop and then a click like it catches. I can't figure out what would still be spinning after I shut the motor off. Honda just put a new centrifugal clutch and drum on, but it made this strange noise before I had that done. Does this sound like something serious or expensive to fix. Just wondering if any of you have ran into this problem. My friends electric shift rancher did the same thing, but he sold it before we figured out the problem.
Wonder if it has to do with the recoil starter?? Just a wild guess though, maybe take it off, and run the bike and shut it off, see if the noise is still there, try to narrow it down at least.
It could poss be something related to the pull start unit. The unit is easy to remove and you'll be surprised of how much debris is in there from the years of riding.I put the H.L pullstart leakshield on mine at 10 hours and there was already signs of water contamination in the unit.I don't know if you can run the bike without it on,the kit had a new bolt and spacer to act as the oem pullstart unit. You had to install this when you removed the oem pullstart assemble. That area of the bike is a straight shot into the internal engine if that seal behind the bolt fails, water and dirt enters the lower end of engine. It also could be the one way bearing that's located in the clutch basket, they tend to go bad after years of abuse, just like the clutch linings.Another part of engine that rotates after turning off is the charging system(stator, pickup, etc).Could poss sound like a whine like an alternator on a car that is starting to go bad.Hope I could help ya out some???
I just got the front cover off of the motor, and its the sprag or as its also called, the one way clutch that has went out. Looks like it takes some special tools to do the work. Honda just has to make it hard to work on. Its gonna be fun.
