Start in gear???

Buddy's new 06 Rubicon. Should this bike start in gear? With the brake applied the bike will turn over but not start. Will not turn over without the brake. Why would Honda want the bike to turn over in gear and not start or is there something wrong with this bike?

My 07 Foreman will start in gear if I hold in the front brake.
Yup, it should start
My 05 will start in forward and reverse with front brake applied. Will not even crank with the kill switch Off. Id say something is wrong with it.
Thanks. I'll tell him to get it checked.
Start in Gear

Make sure the dash reads D or R. Sometimes I am sure you all have seen a case when you are not running, you select D and the dash displays -- Even though the shifter is in D, it will crank all day and not start. Rock the bike a bit until the gear you selected appears on the screen and it will fire right up. This happened to me a few times until I noticed what was going on. Hope this helps.

I think that this is exactly what is happening. He mentioned that sometimes the dash doesn't show the gear he is in. I didn't pay any attention to the display when I was trying to start it in gear. Just figured that whatever interlock switch allowed it crank in gear would also let it fire up. Doesn't having to rock the bike to get it to start defeat the whole purpose of the start in gear feature?
Yeah a little, however, if you shut the bike off in gear, it will be fine when you go to start it. This seems to only happen a little if you try changing gears with it turned off. I always start in what ever gear it is in, then select desired gear. Hope this helps some.
Helps a lot. At least I know what to watch for when it happens. Thanks!
Might want to take the left side plastic off and check the shifter linkage and make sure everything is tight on it. Also, if you park and leave it in gear while on a slight incline it will come out of gear.
Yeah...It should start in gear with the brake applied...the only time mine want is when its not locked in a gear good...mine also wont start in reverse, it just turns over but never fires.
mine will start in gear with the break applied, only if I shut it off in gear, if I turn the bike off in neutral, then put it in d, or r, it will only turnover, not actually start.
My 05 Foreman is manual shift and will start in any gear with the front brake lever in.I never tried it with the kill switch off though.
