Repairing Sun/Water Damaged Display Polarizing Film

This weekend I ordered a new sheet of polarizing film for my 1999 Honda TRX450S on Amazon and replaced it. It was a fairly simple straight forward process. I replaced myn because it was not visible at all and it looked to have had water in the screen at some point.

Required Parts:

Clear Tape
Clear Caulk
Thick piece of clear plastic.
Dielectric Grease

Tools:
10mm Socket
Flat Head and Phillips Screwdrivers

Steps:
1: Remove Cage around 3rd headlight.


2: Remove flat head screw below display.


3: Cover comes apart with a little prying.
4. There are 4 nuts holding the display on to the mount remove them.


5. Remove fuel tank fairings and fuel tank and the inner fender covers.
6. The connector to the display is located forward and left of the fuel tank.


7. Carefully disconnect the connector. (If your atv is anything like myn I like to get it dirty. Pull the disconnected connector back through the fairings and through the hole in the mounting bracket.
8. Remove the 4 round covers on the back of the display and remove the 4 screws behind them.


9. The cover on the display will come apart fairly easily. (I used a razor blade and very gently pried them apart).
10. There are two screws holding the circuit board to the back of the display cover remove them.


11. On the backside of the circuit board there are 5 screws holding the LCD screen to the circuit board remove them.


12. Remove the plastic cover that is holding the lcd glass in place.


13. Very carefully remove the LCD glass and peel the white connector away from the board.




14. With a hot knife or razor blade VERY CAREFULLY remove the polarizing film. (Clean really good)
15. Reconnect the connector and put the polarizing film between the Circuit board and the LCD Glass. (You will have to press kind of firmly and turn the key on) If you do not see anything on the display turn the film over or change the direction of the film until you see something on the display. Once lined up properly you will know. (Do it with the lights on and off, make sure you look at it from different directions too to make sure its the correct direction)


16. Cut the film with a knife or scissors to fit. (I also found a thick piece of clear plastic to put behind the polarizing film to sandwich it in place.
17. At this point I put the Screen back in the plastic holder and place the polarizing film and the thick piece of plastic behind it.
18. I then used a tiny piece of tape on either side to hold everything in place while I put the Screen and surround back on the circuit board.


19. Screw the 5 screws back in and 2 screws holding the circuit board to the back cover.
20. TEST, TEST, TEST!! plug your display back into the connector and turn the key on. (I had to take myn apart several times because I either put something on backwards or the thin white strip with the connectors wasnt touching all the way across) PATIENCE!! Do not try to rush it will only cause you more issues.
21. Once you have verified the display is working and clearly and visible start re assembly.

Re-Assembly:
1. With the lcd and surround now mounted back on the circuit board and the circuit board screwed back down the the display back piece start re assembly.
2. I put a small bead of clear caulk around the edges of the back pate. (For the life of me I could not get the gasket to stay on between the front and back covers).


3. Once down carefully put the front cover back on and flip over.
4. Put the 4 screws holding the back and front plate together in. (I filled the holes with caulk after I put the screws back in).


5. Place the small round covers back on the back cover.


6. Put the display back on the bike and fish the cable back through.
7. I highly recommend using some dielectric grease on the connector as myn was a pain to get apart. (I thoroughly cleaned the connector with alcohol before electric grease).


8. Enjoy your newly refurbished LCD screen for about $10 in supplies.

Nice write-up, thanks for doing this. I have a old meter that I will have to try this on. I didn't know bad polarizing film will cause display issues.

It was suprisingly easy so I figured I would share. Myn hasnt really worked since I bought the bike.

I must have hit a switch inside the meter or something because I could have sworn that it was reading in MPH when I got the atv. However it was so dim and sun damaged I really couldn't read it.

Im trying to rebuild my lcd but i cant get any reading and i have air bubles in the display. I can run my finger across it and see the digits but it wont work through the white strip :(

How did you get airbubles in it did you use glue or something?

No its samsung s3 fims with adheseive backs. i got 10 for 4 dollars. they work because i can see everything when i run my finger accross the disply with a lil pressure. I think the white strip aka zebra stripe isnt making good contact.. i was also wondering if the back film is different since it has a solid white side

i dont think the bubbles are the reason it wont work tho.. i know they may be an issue once i get it working but atm im trying to get the lcd to power on when i push it down on the board.. i cleaned it all up with alcohol etc but still no beuno

i was looking at your guide and you did a great job.. how did you align the film. i got mine both so that light can go through ie the clearest angle.. i was wondering am i supposed to have it where light cant shine through on the bottom and clear on the top ? If that is the case that maybe explain why mine arent lighting up.

so i noticed the dielectric grease did you get that at autozone ?

Odd, I used a cheap piece of polarizing film on myn with no adhesive. I did have the same issue when testing but you have to put it partial back together to get it to hold the white strip firmly in place. I actually removed the white backing piece with the old film and didn't re use it. Seemed to work fine once I had it sandwiched in there correctly and tightened down the screws.

I was able to hold it firmly enough together but myn was a little dim too so I just screwed it together with my drill and tested until it looked right.

Mine was working barely before I took it apart. I cleaned it all up real good and found out my LCD itself is messed up but should still work since it was before I disassembled it. But I can't see anything on it ?. So far I've put one piece of polarized film in back tried reorientaing it several ways then I use a pice in my hand for the front constantly reorientating it and so far all I get is a blank back lit screen ?

The white strip on the back side with the contacts on it is not making full contact and from your pictures looks to be shifted slightly. If you put he screen on and lightly push on the bottom of the screen are you able to get the contacts to line up. I remember this part being the biggest pita with re assembly.

I'm thinking my little zebra stripe is messed up or not making proper contact.. I have 3 displays taken apart of 4 that. I own lol. The e apart I can't get to work lol

On a side note. I also have the one from my 07 500 parts bike it has like a total opposite plug. As in I can plug them into each other. was wondering can I wire it up somehow but it looks complicated.

These 2 (03 Rubicon 500 i think off the top of my head trx500fa and 07 Foreman 500 Trx500fpe with Power Steering) plug right into each other. I've taken some more pictures in the differences I've found in the 450s and the Rubicon 500 Meter Speedo display internals. The zebra stripe on the 450 is as long as the clear holder thingy. The 500 one has a shorter one and tabs on the clear holder.

I will make a youtube video this afternoon of what I'm trying with the polqriIng film on these displays to get the digits to show. If you can check it out and tell me if I'm doing something wrong I would be greatly appreciative ?

Yeah no problem. I wish I had a couple of parts bikes to tinker with. I have seen a few on cl for a few hundred dollars but haven't been able to justify buying some of them as they need a lot of work.

i didnt get around to making the video yet. But i just sold all my parts bikes. trying to clean up my yard. i kept the displays tho :) I recently bought one for 80$ from a guy whos rubicon motor locked up. Im currently using that one on my rubicon and have 2 in a ice cream bucket. I have one 02 450s meter and one 07 500 meter that definitely works but i cant use it without changing the plug and hoping the wires line up well enough that the speed and gear position others work I know fuel gauge and other things wouldnt work etc..
