only 4 bolts holding it in place. once you get it off just use a water hose to flush it out real good, let it dry and lubicate it real good. this would also be a good time to seal it up. The best way is to completely taking it apart, but some dont feel comfortable with the spring inside. if it comes unwound, it can be a B to wind it back up.

Just how much trouble is it to pulling it off and cleaning it out?

well i took mine off tonight. it was tough getting to some of the bolts but got it off. if i had to do again i would i would have flipped it on back rack and taken off the skid plate.
i took the recoil apart completely and cleaned it up real good. tomorrow night i will reassemble and seal it up before i put it back on.
