Hi everyone. I just rebuilt my hondamatic transmission in my 2001 Rubicon 500 and I am not sure if my primary gear had a dowel pin in it, or if it came out and that is why my oil pump failed, leading to my bearing failure in my hondamatic. :frown2: Is there supposed to be a dowel in the primary gear? Thanks.

if you are talking about the driven gear on the hondamatic, yes there is a dowel and four bolts. but the screen in bottom of engine and screen in tank would catch the dowel and keep it out of the pump. Also oil pump pickup has a heavy duty screen in it. make sure to check both of the screens, the one in oil tank and bottom of engine. the one i just rebuilt had both screens plugged up and ripped loose from pump suction.

just curious, what did you need to fix in the hondamatic? did motor side swivel swash plate bearing go out?

If there was a dowel in the drive gear, I don't remember seeing it when I took it apart. I will order one tomorrow. The screen in the oil tank and oil pick up was fine, but the screen in the bottom of the engine was torn. Two bearings were destroyed in the Hondamatic. The one Honda doesn't supply Nachi 49BAO8S2 angular contact bearing and a Nachi 6813. I could get the 6813 bearing, and replaced the unavailable bearing with a FAG7209-B-TVP. I work in a machine shop so I had the bearing insert machined to allow for clearance on the shaft. All the other pieces looked undamaged so I am in the process of reassembly. Hopefully it works when I get it all together.

the fag7209b-tvp is a plastic composite cage bearing, not a metal cage. it is almost always the motor side swivel swash plate bearing ( Nachi 49BAO8S2) that goes out on the early (2001-2004) rubys, the bearing has a plastic composite cage that breaks and the bearing fails.
i have done a couple using the 7209b, but with metal cages only. they work good.

Yes it is a plastic cage. I hope it will hold out. I figured the cage failed because of lack of oil from the bad oil pump. Does the cage/bearing usually fail first and destroy the pump, or does the pump fail first and destroy the cage/bearing? The original cage was in pieces and melted with ball bearing pieces everywhere. If it fails again, next time I will use a bearing with a steel cage.

the last two i did the oil pumps were still working, last one the pump was actually really good shape, but put a new updated one in anyway. i think the screens clog up and restrict the oil flow, plastic does not belong in a hondamatic, too much heat and pressure. if the bearing had a metal cage most of the older hondamatic's would not have failed.
I have not seen a oil pump failure but have heard the 2001 ruby's had a problem with the oil pressure relief valve sticking.
the only reason the 6813 bearing went out is from all the crap from the Nachi 49BAO8S2 getting in it.
Also i would bite the bullet and order a metal cage bearing from Locate bearings, they have Koyo, 7209B with metal cages made in Japan for $45. about $54 delivered.
Do it once but do it right is my motto...........
My 2001 ruby is still running like a champ but it is only used for hunting and pulling a seeder and fertilizer around for feed plots, never been in mud or rode hard. it has almost 400 hours and just under 2500 miles on it. those days are long gone for me ( after turning 60 every new experience is an ache and pain.) When I was young it was dirt bikes no 4 wheeler's around yet....

Hi Harig.
I´m a Danish guy who just bought a 2004 Honda 400, where 3 bearings is worn out in the Hondamatic. I can see that bearing 49BA08S2 can be replaced by a 45 mm 7209B, and a bit of machining. But also bearing 22BT07S7 is damaged and can´t be bought. Have you any experiences in modifications to replace that bearing with standard bearing? Hope you can help me. Thanks in advance. Br Ole Schultz
