I have a similar issue. Seems to happen if I park with atv in gear and shut off engine At times I have to use manual shifter if left in gear at shut off. If I park in neutral there doesn't seem to be and issue. I was thinking that the angle sensor maybe was going bad. Would be interested in what you determine your problem to be.

 

Are you rocking the machine while trying to shift it? Have you load tested the battery? Is it trying to shift and just not going into neutral?

 

Don't want to highjack this thread but to answer your questions. No, not rocking the bike. Has been on pretty flat ground when it has happened. The battery is new (autocraft/plenty of cca) this year and I keep it charged. Yes, it does try to shift but is less than a solid shifting sound if you know what I mean.

 

Try rocking the machine when doing it. Sometimes you have to relieve the pressure on the gear or line things up for them to shift (even on flat ground). The shift motor could also be getting dirty or weak and when it's not running the voltage is lower going to the motor not letting it shift completely.

 

Thanks for the info. toodeep. Will try this out next time it is a problem. Probably be a good idea to pull that shifter motor and inspect. Sounds like a good winter project.
