Pull start sealing?

How do you all go about sealing your pull start without having to seal the whole thing off? I dont really feel like spending the $60 on HL but if it will save my engine ill do it! How would i drain it also?

On mine I just took the pull start off and put a bead of silicone all along the mating surface and a dab in the drain hole in the bottom of the motor. Then just put it back on and pull the rope out a little and put a thick bead around the rope hole, then push it bak in to seal good. Then fill the end of the handle with it so no water can seep in. Works good and youll still have the P.S. just in case you need it.
What kind of silicone? Anyone in particular?
Blue RTV

I did the same thing. Pulled it off and ran a bead all the way around the housing and around the bolt holes and put it back on. Rand a bead around there the pullrope neck comes into the housing and then inside the pullrope pocket. Filled the rope end (handle) up and went on my way.
Ill give it a shot this weekend! Ive heard its hard to get one of the bolts off. Dont know if this is for removing the whole assembly to install the HL shield.

You want have to remove that nut. Thats the nut that connects to the crank.
all you have to do it remove the (I think 4) bolts that hold the actual cover and recoil to the back of the engine. a few of them are hard to get to but not hard to remove
I left mine the way it is except for where the rope goes into the motor, i filled that hole with a liquid rubber and haven't had any problems. I don't ride a lot of mud and water, only when it is in the way to where i'm going.
I am almost scared to even in look in mine. I bet there is all kind of dirt &
junk in there. I definately need to do that to ours. As a matter of fact, i
think i've only used the pull start on mine once just to see if it works.
Railroader, I would think that yours should be fine but your wifes is a different story, you might want to check hers since she's the mudder of the family! Just messing withing ya...haha!!
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Last time we rode, I was the mudder.
I will prove myself. Just wait. Ha!Ha!

We spent more time going around the mud holes this past Sunday. But I guess for someone who can only go straight during their day job, needs to be able to turn for fun. Just playing with you.
It took a few seconds to sink in what you said, but i get it now. Stand up
for me Doug. Tell'm what a great mudder i am .

I think we'll need to see pics of that one. Even just some pics of mud ON your bike will do.
Here ya go. Proof from last Sunday. I tried to post a movie, but it was too big.
Looks like a little water puddle, my dsughter would splash around in to me!
Come on now. What do i have to do to prove meself? It doesn't get much
sloppier than that hole there.
