PROBLEMS AFTER SNORKEL INSTALL/// HELP PLEASE

9424 Views 24 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Dale07Foreman
bike ran like a champ before i installed in. followed instructions fron rincon650 and everything went together just fine. the bike starts, i cover the snorkel and the bike dies. i go to drive it and at part throttle or wide open she runs like ****. spits and sputters. i pull the choke and it made no difference at all. it seems its worse at part throttle. before the install i had a jet kit put in and the settings were-- 165 jet, and the needle set on the 3rd clip, and 2 1/2 turns out.

please help, i'm trying to go out this weekend

Try putting your stock jet back in and move your clip back to where it was.
so make it leaner? i dont have my stock needle and dont know which notch would be the stock location. this is my 1st bike so i'm sorry for the stupid questions.
some people say to put in the larger jet to make it richer, because your letting in more air. well i already have a k&n filter and by installing the snorkel i would think it would be harder for the carb to pull in air, so that would make me think a smaller jet. because the carb has to pull air all the way front the front of the bike instead of the short little runner the bike comes with stock.
i had honda install the ket kit and the never gave me back the rest of the kit, so dont have anything that the bike came with stock.
What wheeler are you ridin?
06 foreman 500 s
I can't really speak for the '06 500, but on my '02 450 I run the stock jet with a K&N and it is just about perfect with my snorkle. Hopefully someone with an '06 will chime in and get ya set straight.
what size snorkel? you need to be mostly 2" or aleast mostly all the way. Also check the air valve. It is a valve that is on the side of the carb and has a screw holding it in place by a fraction of the head of the screw. there is a spring that goes in side it and if the air check valve has been bumped or falls off and the spring is not in there you will have very similiar problems this happened to me.

its 2'' all the way. i have no idea what your talking about with the other stuff. i looked over everything before i button it all up and everything looks just like the way i found it
didnt try
Slidellforeman.. Am getting on it for you. This is the same set up everyome is running ( 2 inch snorkle and that jet..most with a jet kit..) Try the air box lid. This will let you know bout the air/fuel mixture. I am looking on the DynoJet directions now to see what jet..
Look under the 500 Foreman section.... the second page.... under " Custom snorkle and DJ Jet kit ". This talks about a 162 jet as stock and someone had the same problem. They moved the clip to the SECOND notch and fixed the problem. Read that and tell me what you think. Sounds like the solution......
now does this make sence......i took out my 165 and installed the 160 jet and the bike runs 80%better. still a little popping and sputtering at about 3/4 throttle. before it was so bad at half throttle it wasnt driveable

input???!!!!!
Just a thought, but you could have water or trash in the gas tank!
1 step ahead of ya, did a fuel sample and was good to go. all i dont understand is that everyone here says to install a 170 and be doen with it. i install a 160 from a 165 and it gets better
what's you plug look like? I dont see how it can be running better if dropping a size on jets. I still think you getting to much air for the 165 jet that you where using. Because you said it was running fine with the 165 before installing the snorkel on it. most everyone around here with a snorkel and aftermarket exhaust on the 500's are using a DJ 170.

Like I said before try tapeing off part of the snorkel and see what she does.
went even smaller to a 155 jet and she runs like a raped ape. no popping, no sputtering, and now i can do a wheelie.
installed and new plug and made about 3 hard passes down the road, took out the plug and it looked great, no white or greyish at all. i installed a 170 jet and the bike would run so bad it would go over 20mph. put in a 160 and it got 80% better, put in a 155 and wham.. perfect

mike
glad you got it taken care of. sorry for all the confusion. I see where I made my mistake. they where using a stock Kehein #170 not the DJ 170

can you explain better what you just posted, i dont quite understand. dont be sorry, you didnt mislead me. i read alot of post and it seemed alof of ther people were doing the same and i didnt know why when i went to a smaller jet it cured the problem
this is a chart of different brands of jets to cross reference between OEM jets and dyno jets that are suppose to be the same size. Just look at this chart, it gives the size of the jets and the brands. the honda's use a Kehein carburator. The 170 is the oem kehein jet and the DJ 154 is an aftermarket jet. Which you can see that they are numbered different.
