Popping and sputtering.

Okay I have an 05 ES It is snorkled on both ends. I have put a 170 jet in complements of truegrit and the power difference is great. But I still have my origional problem. When I hold full throttle in 3, 4, or 5th I get a poping noise and a sputter . This happens at about 37 MPH. I can't figure this out. I thought maybe that it was going lean, but I installed the larger main jet and set the mixture at 2.5 turns like I was told. I have alot more torque but at speed I get that popping and sputter. It has great throttle response through 1,2,3 and then it wants to cut out and sputter and pop. I was told once that I could have water and dirt in the carb, but I just had the bowl off and it was clean inside. I only have 185 miles on the bike. I am looking for answer that could solve my problems. Thanks in advance for any help.

Not that i am a professional by any stretch of the imagination but doesnt it sound like it is too rich? especially if you don't have a pipe of air filter.

maybe the snorkels are a air restriction and you should have leaned it out a tad instead of making it more richer?

like i said before i am playing with my jetting right now blindly also hpefully somebody else will chime in.
What does the plug look like. Pull the choke out when it starts to sputter, i fit gets better your lean. If it gets worse you are rich. My bike never sees 30+ mph anyway. but thats besides the point. You may have to tune the mixure screw a little.
these guys talking about 37mph i wish mine went that fast. lol

??????????? Why not.

It used to go 56 on the speedo. I wonder if it just won't do it anymore. It should not lose more than 10 MPH with the tires huh.
I might be incorrect, but when I first snorkeled my 450.There was no need for my bike to be jetted,it ran perfect and the plug always was right. When I put a pipe and air filter on it,that was when the jetting needed to be done.Just my 2 cents!

looks like i am in the same boat after my test run this weekend.

anything over 30 mph in 4th gear forget about it. sputtering, popping and i died once or twice. by downshifting and keeping the rpm's up sometimes i could recover from it stalling but i would be in 2nd or 1st trying to recover.

guess i need to take my own advice?
how sensitive is the air/fuel screw? i am wondering if i need to move the clip down a notch(raising the needle) or be able to fix it with a solid turnin only.

1st threw 3rd worked great, just as long as i didnt go over 25mph

if i reinstalled the float wrong after putting the jet in and it was"sticking" that would effect the bike from startup not just in top end correct?
At first i thought it was the mogels/humps in the trail and the bowl was filling with too much gas making it sputter. now i am sober and it doesnt sound as logical as it did yesterday

I think that it is an overrich problem. I ran mine up to 37MPH and when it statred popping I reached over and pulled the 2" flex hose off at my reducer and the problem cleared on mine. So that tells me that it is starveing for air at the upper RPM's. I just need to build my snorkle with bigger pipe.
gotcha, thanks for the input
That's exactly what I was thinking.Try to remove airbox lid or remove air filter and try to run it out again. What does the spark plug look like after it sputters?light black(rich) or solid white or reddish(lean). My buddy had a bad jetting problem with his 01 Rubicon, due to snorkel pipe diameter and stock exaust and a KN filter. He called the jet kit producer(DYNOJET) and got on tech support line and told the tech exactly how it was acting and when it did it.They told him over the phone which jet# to use and how to adjust the air/fuel mixture screws.Look up Dynojet tech support number and hopefully they can help ya out.Don't want to run engine to rich or lean, poss damage engine from both.Good luck.
What size of pipe were you running for your snorkel the first time.
