The racks appear to be just painted from the factory. The paint will scratch off real easy. I was considering having mine Powder Coated. Powder Coating is a lot more durable than paint. You really have to hit it with a hammer to get it to chip, however it will not scratch off like paint does. Powder Coating really looks good as well. I called a local powder coater and he gave me a price of $125.00 to sandblast and coat both front and rear racks. I will probably go this direction on mine.

that sounds like a plan to me.

he may charge you less if you can sound blast them yourself, i have a friend who has a small sand blasting booth...that would only take 10 minutes and might save you 50 bucks or so...

i think the perfect solution would be some type of wrap....

like that exhaust wrap that you can wrap on motorcycle exhausts. you soak it in water and then wrap it around the racks and when it dries it gets hard...that would be best b/c it wont chip or crack and you can beat on it all day and it wont budge...
