Not happy with conventional winch mounts

6173 Views 20 Replies 17 Participants Last post by 2foremen
I am not really convinced that mounting a winch under the bumper and plastic is really the best place to mount a winch. I am looking for something more along the lines of a bumper mounted winch that puts the winch up higher, out of the mud and water, and also where I can see it and respond to any uneven cable wraps. I like the design of the Warn bumper. Does anybody have one and if so, how difficult would it be to mount a winch in the bumper or in front of it? Thanks

Here is a pic of my setup. Never had a problem with it and it works fine.
I have tried to mount my winch in a couple of different spots personally. The problem comes when you get stuck. If you get it higher, it pulls the front end of your atv deeper and makes more work on the winch. Or if you mount it higher and hook onto something higher so the frontend doesnt dive, there is alot of force against your bumper mounts. After trying three different positions I finally mounted it where it belongs. Same plate as the above post.
I've got that same set up too no probs for me
Check out my pics, as my winch is mounted out front. There is a link at the bottom of this post.

liteheaeded I was thinking the same things you are so I made a mount out of 2" square tubing and a receiver hitch for a pickup. It is very similar to the montana jacks setup pictured above, and I have had great results I will post some pics soon.
Now were talking

I like that setup and am interested in seeing ho you made yours. I really like the style of the Warn bumper and wonder if it can be modified to accept an external winch?
winch mounts

check out montanajacks.com. They have a mount for your winch that you can move from front to back w/ quik disconnects. It is also mounted up high. I love it on my foreman.
i got a winch mount with mine that doesnt sit flush on the frame/bumper, it sits up a bit and the mount is kind of on an angle, and there is a metal plate around the fairlead on the front bumper
Who makes this mount or any mount like this? This is exactly how I want it to mount.

LORCUX How'd you keep your winch so clean?
looks like the whole bike is clean. we pressure wash ours after every ride and it still is never that clean. i dont even think it was clean like that when we got it.
MJ set up is convenient but impractical. I climb a lot of steep angles, this simply wouldn't work for me. I too have the AP winch mount, haven't had any problems with mine.
Yeah lorcux im also wanting to know how ur bike is so clean...what do u do? i hand washed mine and everything it still dont come out looking like that...Didnt even look like that brand new...
Guys I remember talking to him when he got it. He got the winch right after he bought the bike and it was clean. I dont think he even rode it until after that pic. I have not seen him on here in a while.
Oh I see...
here is a link to a bumper and winch combo. puts the winch out front and higher.http://www.xpatv.com/xtreme_bumpers.htm

When I purchased my foreman, I took it on one ride. We rode about 50 miles. After the ride, I washed it up as good as I could. Then I put the ITP wheels and tires on it and also the Aluminum Products skid plate kit and Warn winch. Then I rode it more and actually had to use the winch numerous times to pull out my friends Rubicon from mud. I do keep it clean with tire foam. But, I also don't mud and rock climb as much as others. I mostly trail ride and use it to hunt from. We just had our first child so riding has gone from slim to none here lately. But, turkey season is getting ready to come in, so I know I'll be taking it out. I am one that doesn't ride that much anyway. I just wanted a good atv that would last a while.
Oh ok, well it still looks good though...
JPA2002 Were does the winch and the plate mount to on the bike?
