it an 04 rubi.
Is it not going into gear at all..?.. How white is the oil..?.. The water in the oil isn't good for the Rubicon's hydrostatic transmission .. You should change the oil several times with cheap oil to get as much water out as possible .. There could be water in some of the wire couplers so they should be cleaned with contact/brake cleaner and re-greased with dielectric grease .. ..

The Rubicon should go into gear even with water in it's connectors or angle sensor because they are designed to go into fail-safe mode to get you home ..
The oil pump & hydrostatic are a fairly expensive item on the Rubicon

What does the bike do when you put it into drive or reverse ..?
it will rev up and the trans. will make a humming noise like it wants to go into gear but it just wont.
he changed the oil and it still wont go in gear.
he killed it and put it in gear and it would roll like it would do in neutral.
what is wrong
all the linkage is tight right? It's probably fine but you might get lucky with the obvious.
Was it just started after it was in water or was it driven ..?
MY RUBI IS THE ONE GOOSE500 WAS TALKING ABOUT. I AM A LITTLE WORRIED THAT SUCBA TRIP IS GONNA COST ME $$$. MY LOCAL MECHANIC TOLD ME TO LET IT DRAIN FOR A DAY OR TWO AND DRY ALL THE WIRES. BUT IF IT WAS ELECTICAL, WHEN ITS NOT RUNNING AND YOUPUT THE TRANS IN GEAR, IT SHOULDN'T ROLL. THATS NOT THE CASE, IT ROLLS FREELY. IS IT POSSIBLE THAT SOMETHING IN THE TRANS IS BROKEN?

ANY HELP GREALY APPRECIATED....THANKS!
The bike is going to have to have an oil pressure test done on it .. there is a special fitting needed ..I will measure my fitting this morning when I get to work but I believe it is 10X1 mm ,Honda uses a banjo type with a quick connect fitting on it .. I have the Honda gage but I mostly use my Fluke PV500 & Fluke graphmeter to test the oil pressure..
The pressure is:
min. idle== 22 PSI
min. 5000 RPM ==116 PSI

I've put about 2 dozen hydrostatic transmissions in Rubicons and I've never seen 1 just not work without the operator not hearing/feeling something .. Even when the hydro transmission's rivets break off the squash plates you can feel the bike viberate as it tries to move ..
WHAT WHO BE A BALLPARK ESTIMATE ON HOW MUCH TRANS REPAIR MAY BE, BECAUSE I AM IN THE PROCESS OF BUYING A NEW BIKE AND I NEED TO GET AN ESTIMATE OF WHAT IT MAY COST AT THE MINIMUM TO THE MAXTO GET REPAIRS.
THANKS AGAIN

At our shop we charge $40.00 per hour .. Replacing a Rubicon transmission is approx. 10-12 hour job .. Here's a link for a Rubicon transmission ..

here's a link for Rubicon oil pump..

As you can see they aren't cheap .. The hydrostatic pump & oil pump must be replaced as a set .. They are not serviceable but I've taken a few apart to see what was broke in them .. here's a couple of pictures of an oil pump & a hydroststic pump ..

I suggest putting the stock wheels back on and see if it is covered by the warrenty. Maybe it is, if not get intouch with honda and say wtf?

hey Honda Mech. one question.I know Honda says the pumps are not servicable but will they sell any parts for it or not?because if parts are available i have done more than my share of rebuilds for hydraulic motors and pumps (gear and piston swash plate styles) i don't think they are that hard to repair but is Honda saying replace everything to eliminate comebacks or ??????i know they have very tight tolerances and need to be repaired in a super clean environment.just curious.
WELL I ACTUALLY HAD THE STOCK TIRES ON IT WHEN IT HAPPENED BUT MY BIKE IS OUT OF WARRANTY. TODAY I PUT FRESH OIL IN IT AND RAN IT THEN PULLED ALL THREE PLUGS AND LET IT DRAIN. THE OIL CAME OUT WHITE FOR THE THRID TIME. I AM BEGINING TO THINK MY LUCK HAS RUN DRY, I THINK IM GOING TO GIVE THE BIKE TO MY BROTHER AND SAY BEST WISHES AND GET ME A NEW ONE. I THINK I AM FINISHED WITH HONDAS. THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP THOUGH
Honda had a small problem with some of the transmission units on early Rubicon's (especially 2001 models) we still see the odd one back replacement .. Honda is still covering them under "good will warranty" depending on condition ..
Low milage in good condition Honda will pay .. We had 1 last summer rough shape driven hard fenders broken Honda paid 80% of parts only customer had to pay labour ..
We also had some the crank rod bearing went in .. Filings were everywhere and since the Hydro pump can't be disassembled to clean Honda replaced them ..

Now as far as taking that bike back to your Honda dealer ..That depends on how well you get along with your dealer .. If he tells Honda the bike was under water you won't get warranty .. But it wouldn't hurt to try.. If your dealer says no warranty ask him for the phone number of the Honda service rep for your area..

I'm in Atlantic Canada .. I'll have 1 boxed & weighed as soon as I can ..Then I'll PM you ..
WHAT WHOULD MY BIKE WITH SCUFFS AND A LITTLE DISCOLORING BE WORTH WITH THE TRANS THE WAY IT IS. IS IT POSS. THAT I COULD GET $1500, OR IS THAT NOT REASONABLE, ALL THIS IS CONSIDERING THE WORK THAT THE BIKE MAY NEED.

IM NOT EXPECTING YOU TO BE COMPLETELY ACCURATE I JUST WANT AN OPINION.....TO MAKE ME FEEL BETTER.
