noise in front differential

i've got a lot of clunking coming from the front differential. only when in 4 wheel drive. its much worse in reverse, but still there in forward. in 2 wheel it all goes away.
what should i check first?

if it does it in 4x4 and not 2wd then it must be something with the front drive shaft. pull the shaft out of the diff and look and see if anything is broke or anything, that is where i would start. more than likely you should be able to see what is wrong in there.
