Does it look like there was an engine number and its just unreadable or does it look like there wasn't a number even stamped at all? If it looks like there never was a number, the engine case could have been replaced as they don't come w/ numbers when you order a new part. I don't know how wear and tear would scrap off an engine number. To be sure your looking in the right place, it should be stamped on the left side just behind the gray plastic cover on the engine, w/the number facing toward the back.
And yes, as long as there is a frame number your pretty much good to go.
