Ok first...All K&N's need to be cleaned and oiled on a regualer schedule. The oil is what traps the finer dirt. You can get recharge kits at any auto parts stores for around 20 bucks that comes with cleaner and oil. Dont put too much oil on since it will cause it to coat inside of all the chambers and coat the carb.
As for missing a ring...I can say its probably not caused by daily use! I would have to say someone may have forgotten to put one in....
