it's probably just seized up.Try some wd40 or just take the winch apart,it's really not that hard at all.I had the spool "birdnest" on me so i had to take it all apart.It's a good time to waterproof and regrease it as well.

I bought one, I have used it alot, I have submerged it and the contactor and no problems. However, I just noticed yesterday that my free spool won't work. anyone had this trouble? How did you fix it?

Mine don't like to work right off the bat, if I just use the motor and let a little line out it will work then.
