Gas can / Jerry Can

I suppose this belongs in accessories..

Anyhow, I've seen those flat gas cans (about 4-5 gallons) and thought they were genius, I was going to buy a couple until I saw the price, they run about $100 plus shipping.

I think this is an insane price for some molded plastic.

Right now I'm thinking about long trips and storage for camping/hunting etc. I do want a utility storage setup on the rear of my Foreman 500, but without a seat. I wanted something for the fuel that would be as secure as possible. Should I find some sort of cargo setup that has open racks for fuel cans? Or has anyone seen cheaper stackable units?

Something like that perhaps? It looks like the gas cans might move around too much though. I'm trying to keep everything as tight and secure as possible.

That's a pretty nice box, that with a flat kolpins would be awesome. But I wonder about the weight....the Kolpins is about 30lbs filled, and it's hanging off the back there. What do you do about weight distribution?

Would it be smarter to have a couple fuel packs on the front and cargo on the back to even it out? Would it even matter with the quad handling on trails?

never really though about waight distribution. it probably would me smarter to have the box on back and cans up front since the foreman dont take much over the back to pull the front up...my dad learned the hard way

edit: forgot to say that i think the reason they are so expensive is because they can survive, dont quote me on this, a 700 pound atv on it.

That's incredible. However, I'm pretty careful with my equipment, for me a cheap one would work just fine vs a kolpin.

I think the cargo with one pack on the back, and a pack on the front, would be ok. The back of the foreman doesn't extend that far back, so I'm thinking the weight wouldn't be too bad.

I built my own gas rack. it works very well. I am gonna try to attach an image. The black is a wood platform. I nailed wooden strips underneath to give it about a 1 inch lift off of the rack. The red are the gas tanks. I took a jigsaw and cut out the shape of the gas cans so they are sitting in a hole in the wood and resting on the atv rack. The blue circles are where I put heavy zip ties througha nd zip it to the rack in all four corners. The white is where I have screwed eye bolts int the wood. I can put rubber straps through the top of the gas can handle and hook em into the eye hooks. It cost me about 3 bucks to make and works awesome!

Here's what i built.

Holds 4 Gallons, Four bolts and it comes off to free up the rack. Cost me $25 for the holders at Princess Auto.

I ended up buying a Kolpin Flat Fuel Pack Sr.

As well as a Kolpin soft cargo case for the back.

one of the straps for the Fuel Pack snapped today, going to have to buy some more velcro.

I purchased a 5gal. gas can holder from www.cabelas.com for $40, it will also hold a 16qt. cooler. It works nice but if you try to climb a really dare devil hill remember to take out the full gas can (b/c this past weekend I remember the hard way) that extra weight hangin off of the back of the quad doesn't help you from flippin backwards down a hill about 12 times.

The only thing is you have to take off the back rack to attach the gas can holder & cut the bolts down b/c they are about an inch or so too big. It is very solid.

I bought the Kolpin Fuel Pack mounts. They bolt onto the back rack. Very nice, although I could only find one bar to attach to...I wanted to have at least two attach points, still seems pretty secure though considering..
