why would you want to switch from es to S?

Look at all the posts on here that talk about shifting problems on '03 and older es. They aren't very reliable, and you can't hold a cup of coffee and shift at the same time.
never had any issues with my 02 not shifting right. Knock on wood! if you change it to S i think the wiring harness has to be changed to cause when you shift with the emergency shifter the display just blink and doesn't indicate what gear your in

I can hold a cup of coffee and a beer. NO issues with mine.
I've never actually converted one, but it would be pretty easy to do. All you would need to do is change the shifter shaft to one with splines and buy a foot shifter to bolt to the shaft. The shifter shaft is easy to change once you get the rear crankcase cover off, just one bolt holds it in. Then, remove the shift motor reduction gears so it will shift easier. It wouldn't really be a big deal if the gear position indicator doesn't show the gear. If I remember correctly, I don't think the foot shift Foreman 450 shows the gear position anyway, does it? I believe the 350 Rancher shows the gear position when using the emergency shifter, I think it does, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I've heard that the gears are made different on the ES models and might not hold up when converted to a foot shift. But I figured they might hold up OK as long as you don't hold up on the foot shifter, rev the engine, and release the foot shifter to pop a wheeler or something. I've heard of people converting them, but I haven't heard how well they hold up over a long period of time.

all foreman have a gear position indicator S or ES. just on the es model if you where to use the emergency shifter as your primary shifter the indicator will just blink what gear your in. my service manual says continued use can cause internal damage to the master shift arm and lever must be operated by hand and never by foot.

I still can't remember the foot shift 450s have a gear position indicator on the display, but I might be wrong. I know the 500s do, but I didn't think the 450s did unless it was the ES model.

I believe all the shift linkage is exactly the same, whether it's ES or manual shift, other than the shifter shaft not having splines on the ES models. I think the problem is because the dogs on the gears are different.

This came from the owner's manuals of the 450S and 450ES.

Display for foot shift model, without gear position indicator.

Display for ES model, with gear position indicator.

maybe the S model doesn't come with it then lol i honestly cant remember the last time i rode a S model foreman maybe around 02 or 03 and the displays look the same lol. wouldn't ever go back to ridding an S model atv i hated having one foot wet and one foot dry
I wasn't real sure either, my memory isn't the best, but I remember that the foot shift has a different gear position switch than the ES model has. The gear position switch on the foot shift just has the neutral and reverse positions, while the gear position switch on the ES model, has the R, N, 1, and 5 gear positions.
i'm converting mine from ES to S, it would work sometimes, then i sprayed the bike with the water hose and it wouldn't do anything, i pulled the shift motor off and it would work, until you set it in place then it would blink 5 times, i've had this back as secondary since last winter, i sold the rincon, now it is my primary, and the shift motor has always acted up, and i've tried every thing. I HATE IT, so i'm converting mine over to S, i've already removed the shift motor and gears, and orderd an S shift shaft from ebay, and i'm lookin for a used foot shifter shaft from an S model too! or i may just try to find a foot shifter for it. and thats all you have to do, all the other gears are the same. Oh, and when i removed the shift motor and gears, the gear display still worked with every gear i shifted in with a rachet.
Im planning on putting a 450s motor into a 450es frame and chassis.
What are you guys planning to do to the full floorboards when you change to the 450s shifter?
Im thiniking with the full floor there, you wont have the room to downshift but I suppose all you would have to do is readjust the shifter lever but wouldnt that make it to high? Once again Im just curious and exploring my options.
just cut out a hole in the floor board for your foot and the shifter lol
i just bought all the internal gears and all the other transmission parts for an S model used on ebay for $35!!! cant beat that at all, so me and my neighbor are gonna swap em out and won't have anything to worry about any more, just got to make a little cover where shift motor was (easy)
the transmitions are the same on the s and es all you have to change #30 to #10 and pull the gears behind the es motor

yes, i have to change the shifter spindle, and shifter shaft, i've been studying this for a while now, i have it all figured out. i've already removed the shift motor and gears, just go to swap the internals out

I have an 2003 foreman s and there is no gear indicator on mine.

My 2003 has a light for neutral and one for reverse
