es not shifting

16563 Views 32 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  big_daddy_bigfoot
Today on the trails it would not shift out of 3rd and flashed a dash and then 3 and then a dash etc, did not know what to do so I turned off the key turned it back on and it was fine the rest of the day. It does not always shift when I tell it to and it's starting to bother me. Does anyone else have this problem? It's new with 27 miles and I'm wondering if I should take it in and have it looked at. Anyone's thoughts?

If you are down shifting, there is a control feature that does not allow you to shift above a preset speed. This is a safety feature. I am not sure of the specific design set up, but I'm sure someone will be able to comment on that here. I would take it to my dealer if it is new and still within warranty. Also that particular model had 2 recalls. One for the clutch plate and one for tie rod ends. The dealer will repair these at no cost to you. The clutch plate might be your problem.
I have a problem somewhat similar to yours. Occasionally while in Reverse I am unable to shift into Neutral. I have to turn off my switch and when I turn it back on I can shift into Neutral. When I took my fourwheeler in for my updates I mentioned this and was told that the new clutch plate should fix it, but it didn't. I will drop it off again when I have time.
The clutch update has nothing to do w/ the electric shift. If your ES isn't working, no clutch update or adjustment in the world will fix it. The clutch is mechanical, ES is electrical.
Let's see, the es shifts the gears and the clutch lets you shift gears. Why can't the clutch be the problem? I do know that I have rode S models and when stoped sometimes it wont go into gear right and you have to roll it up or back to get it into gear. I don't know what it is but mine did not do it AS bad today. I don't see why it won't shift up going up hills (not big ones).

It's not up shifting right.
The clutch adjustment on the Honda ES models must be adjusted for the ES models to shift properly ..
I've owned a Rancher ES and a Recon ES.Both had shifting problems.Had to replace the crank sensor on both bikes.(twice on the recon, once on the rancher). That's Why I bought a 2006 Foreman S.I'll never own an ES model again.I really like Honda atv's but almost switched makes because of all the troubles with the ESP.
I would not have gotten one if the dealer would not have make us a **** of a deal. They had what she wanted, but I wanted the S but figured Honda had their poop together and had the bugs out of the es. I hope a trip to the dealer will fix it.
I know someone that had problems with the reverse on a Recon ES and Racher ES and they had to replace a sensor on the tranny. I have a 450 ES and have the problem with the gear position blinking and my brother took the angle sensor (I think it is called) and cleaned it and it works fine now.

I didn't say the clutch couldn't be the problem, I said the clutch update has no affect on the ES. Your right that the clutch is part of shifting the machine. But the part that gets replaced in the clutch update is the plate that the weights are attached to. If the part is not replaced, it could wear prematurely over a long period of time along w/ other clutch parts. It will not be the cause of a no-shift condition like big_daddy_lightfoot is talking about in the first post of this thread.
big_daddy_lightfoot??

It's ok I'm not going to worry about it, when my 20 hours are up I will take it in and have them look at it. It just kinda makes a guy mad that he researched and researched on what to buy, thought he bought the best and now has to deal with stuff like this. It's to early to tell I guess, I love the thing but wish it would shift when I want it to.
Calling all Honda Mechanics out there...I have a 05 Foreman 500es that I just had serviced for the first time at about 175 miles. I waited because I got the recall about the tie rod ends, but my dealer did not have parts in yet. Anyway in the meantime, I get the clutch update. Long story made short is I had the first service, Oil change, valves adjusted, clutch updated and tie rod ends completed all at once. This was about 2 weeks ago. I had never had one single problem at all with anything prior to this service. I went riding this weekend, put on about 110 Arkansas Trail Miles and had problems shifting. Just about every time I tried to upshift out of reverse, it would not go into neutral. Even with rocking the machine some, it was still hard to get out of reverse. The bike did not even make any sound like it was trying to go into neutral. I just kept trying and all of the sudden it would go. A couple of times, it seemed a little harder to get into 1st from neutral, but not that big of a deal. The getting out of reverse problem really burned me up, knowing that I had never had that problem before and I also just had it worked on. I am not saying that my dealer screwed it up. I'm just wanting to know if there are some adjustments that can be or that need to be made because of the clutch update or is there a break-in period after the modification? I have also read a few things about a sensor that may need to be cleaned. Is that a difficult task or a procedure that I can do?

Dude you have a foreman and a chevy like mine! COOL!

I'm wondering if the "update" is messing them all up. You say you never had a problem before and now it's not shifting right, it sounds like yours shifts about like mine. Sometimes it don't even make the sound it makes when it tries to shift. It almost smells kinda fishy!
OK, Now I have a ticking sound coming from under the seat. Kind of sounds like a baseball card in the spokes of a bicycle only a little quieter. Maybe even like a hissing sound. I have not lost any power or get up and go and the bike still seems to run good, but it is making a noise and it is not right. It also seems to make this sound in every gear and also in neutral. I am hoping for some advice before I have to make another trip to the dealer.......
Thats your valves ticking, they all make that noise, sometimes it becomes more prounounced when they need to be adjusted for the first service
But I just had my valves adjusted about 2 weeks ago for the first service. It was not making that sound before the service! Does this mean that they need to be adjusted again?
No they should be fine, Mine have made an audile tick for over 1000 miles, as to why you only just started hearing it i cant really help you, maybe you just noticed it or theyve loosened up a little since adjusting, either way unless your motor is making some ungodly noise you are just fine. so check your oil to be safe and get out and ride.
Well that is a relief. But I am one of those OCD type people. Even if it is not a problem, can it be adjusted to make it go away?
no you wouldnt want to do that, if you make them to tight you will end up burning a valve.
