Did I make a mistake in buying a Honda Rubicon???

I contacted my dealer today to ask some questions about my warranty in respect to buying larger tires or possibly installing a snorkel. As I suspected, the snorkel will void my warranty according to Honda. What I was surprised to learn is Honda's stance regarding water. In speaking to the Honda Tech, I was told that Honda will NOT warranty the service of your vehicle if there is moisture in your 'final drive'? Someone will have to explain to me what they mean by that....does that mean your diffs and axle housings?

To be honest, I'm a little bothered by Honda's response. I'm not one that looks for water on the trails but it's something that can't be avoided sometimes. In my opinion, Honda misrepresented this vehicle as their warranty does not match their marketing. I can already tell that I'm not going to enjoy working with this dealership when servicing my vehicle.

Final drvie= diffs. They normally dont take on water very easy. Dont be scared by what the dealer told you about the warranty. Most damage you do will be easy to cover up. I hit the mud and water pretty hard with bike. I even drown my bike out once. Not long after I done that the oil pump chain came off and I had to take it in for warranty work. I changed the oil after the drowning out and before I took it in for the warranty work I wiped out the air box, checked the diffs for water, and cleaned up the mud on it. They told me if they found that the bike had water/mud in the oil they would assume it's been abused not warrant the work. To make a long sotry short they didnt find any water/mud and done the work, so I wouldnt be to worried if I were you. Just make sure you swap out the tires and take off the snork before you take it in. They did take a long time to get it done, but they did get it done and even delievered it to me after I went up to pick it up when they said it was done, but when I got there they had just got done testing it and found out there where more problems.

Thanks Joey,

I'll be sure to 'prep' my bike before any service visit. I thought warranty work would be different with an ATV...guess not. Makin' me think I might be better off canceling the extended warranty and having the money applied to my payoff for the bike. Hmmm?
warentys can be a life saver some times but if you plan on going all out wiht the bike i wouldnt worrry about it because more the likely they will find some way to balme it on you but if your just lookin into small things then yeah i would keep the warenty and just do a good clean up on it when takeing it in

Yes they are a life saver. Saved me $1700 in parts alone when the oil pump chain came off. Justin makes a good point though. If you plan on going all out they will eventually be able to tell where the abuse comes from and it would be a hassle to pull off a lift kit, snorkle, tires, dgl (not sure if it voids warranty, but I would guess it does) and what ever else you may have.
I've done zero modifications to my bike. I plan on purchasing tires that won't require a lift. I've considered snorkling my bike but will refrain if it results in Honda voiding my warranty. I was just surprised to hear that they would void my warranty for water in my diffs. I mean, am I the only guy that rides through water over their tires on every ride? How can Honda expect you to totally avoid water on an ATV? I won't ever take my bike swimming but, water is inevitable.
IMO / keep the warranty / just a couple things will make it pay for itself many times over.
Especially if you should happen to have tranny problems or major motor probs.
Its just a good insurance policy to me. ((which I did cash in on when my piston skirt broke and totalled the motor and tranny "hydraulic motor and swashplate")) my parts alone were over 3000 bucks, thats an extended warranty well worth it 10 times over.
You didn't go wrong with the Honda. I've never purchased a warranty, so far nothing has ever gone wrong with any of them. And for the Rubicon, I used mine as a sub and it never quit; very dependable bike.
dealers are full of bs, awhile back my buddy had broken though ice with his foreman, the whole front end was underwater for 10-30mins. only problem was the screen went dead. he took it to the dealer the next morning and he was asked my the head guy who deals with warenty work asked
"has this bike ever seen water" my buddy said "well i cant say it never seen any water" and that was that. he got a whole new pod and adjusted his breaks.
I just bought my 07 and got the 48 month warrenty... i was talkin to the guy and i asked him if it was bull **** was covered.. he siad go bury your bike in mud/water/sand/ we'll fix it.... i made him right it down and sign it.... and i still have the paper... got it lamanated and keep it on the bike @ all times... good choice with the honda...
I would buy the warranty if the dealer promised me that...........
i willl never buy a warrenty agen

when my mom bought her recon new ever since the 1st day its has bine acting up we have took it to the dealer about 4 times and each time they charge us we say what about the warrenty and they say that it dosnt cover when a bike has was sunk
funny thing is it see's mud mabey once every 2 months and has never seen deep water also my dealer is a complet retard we where talking to them about what new bikes they got and the one guy comes up and says "we got that new rincon 800 with efi " me and my mom both busted out laffing and left.
does anyone know of any exhausts that will fit on a 2006 rubicon 500?? i am haveing a hard time finding one.....
You can't really blame the guy for saying they won't warranty water in your diffs. I mean, the only way to get water in there is to have the diff vents underwater, and if you drive with water in the diff, you will wreck it. I think all they mean is they won't cover damaged caused by abuse. If you put your bike underwater, change all the fluids the way you're suppposed to clean out the airbox etc. and don't expect that they will just make Honda pay for it. As long as when they see it, the fluid is clean, there should be no problem.

My dealer is really good. If something fails on the bike he will fix it, just not if it's caused by me being stupid. Like if I cut my front drive axle boot on a branch, I would not expect that to be warranty, that was my fault. Certainly not a 'defect'. But if the wheel bearings go, water or not, that should be covered.

My dealer is pretty good although they will not warranty the wheel bearings after the 6 month warranty is up. I purchased the extended warranty and I have had to replace 2 wheel bearings so far.
One time i was riding my 04 foreman in the creek, and i guess either a stick or rock hit the left CV shaft and knocked it plum out of the diff.

The diff was full of water and the CV was messed up.

I had the extended warranty from honda, and I took it back to the same dealership that i bought it at, and about 4 days later i got it back with a NEW differential and left CV shaft.

They never even asked me anything about water, but i told them what happened.

So? Maybe it's just a dealer thing?

It totally has to be a dealer thing. I was at my dealership yesterday, because my buddy was looking at bikes and I asked the salesperson about snorkeling my bike. He said if you have problems just take off the snorkel and bring it in. In fact he told be to order the little front rectangle piece in the plastic so I have a replacement incase anything happens, cost me $8. So I would definately say its a dealer thing.
