just fixed my buddys bike for the same problem, the automatic tensioner for the timeing chain is broke. causes lots of rattling noise in the front case and causes the valve adjustment to be eratic. 2 ways of replacing the tensioner:
1: notch the colling fin about the tensioner where it is bolted in under the cylinder and remove the (2) 10mm bolts and install new one
2: remove the head and cylinder and remove the the old tensioner and install new one.
rea adjust valves when completed. the spring that is built in to the tensioners are bad about breaking, or getting weak.
