Clutch kit install on 04 450

That looks like a good idea to work on it, standing it up like that. Was it tough to get done? Truegrit is gonna be the resident clutch expert before long.

Actually putting it up on its end was kind of a accident. We couldnt get to one of the bolts on the bottom and had to take half the skid off and put it on its end to do so. Well we just ended up working on it like that. Only downfall was that debris fall into the clutch area very easily, and my bike was a mess.

The install went pretty smooth other than when we were putting the clutch cover back on. We had it all lines up and just couldnt get it to sit properly. Turns out we had to loosen the bottom motor mounts to shift the motor a little bit to get the clutch house away from a part of the frame that was blocking us from putting it on all the way.

Truegrit def. knew what he was doing, you never know maybe he should be the local clutch kit installer.

I don't think so! I put on a good act. It was nice not having to pull the clucth itself off the bike w/ the puller. It only took us an hour to figure out there was no way we could have got the cover back on w/o moving the motor up.

I think next time I would stand the bike up again. It was easier not having to sit on the ground to work on it, plus not removing the clutch and reinstalling it saved about an hour worth of work. The key to doing it the way is make sure the front of the bike is clean to minimize the debris that could fall into the engine.

Robb When do you want to do yours?? I bet we could do it in an hour and a half now. I work cheap!

So since you stood the bike up there was no need to remove the clutch from the bike, so the puller and impact were not needed for the spring intall? Just checking if I am hearing this right

It save a lot of time and energy. Just make sure the front end is clean.

You will need a C-Clamp (I think I put that in the How-to section as well) I used a "Quick Grip" style one to hold the clutch assembly tigh so you can put the E-clips back on.

I was going to stand mine up but I have 2 four post lifts so i put mine on the lift sideways and was able to raise and lower the bike as I needed...

Well today is my day its 7:30 I got the plastics off and I am getting ready to wash it and put it up then I am going in after the clutch and I am going to try to do it without swearing and no dings on the knuckle

Well I took my time cause I was going at it alone, and it ended up taking 6 hours but I did do it twice, and I didn't hve the little t-handle thing, but when I finally got done and went for a ride I just smiled cause when I was in third gear and hit the throttle it gave a little "snap" to my neck and it is ready to go!

I do have two seggestion, one wear leather gloves when scrapping off the gasget off of the front pan I cut the heck out of my hands, second don't forget the e-clips and the little plates, cause if you don't see them till the end then you get to do it twice like me

so now today I get to check the valves brakes and since I am right in there I am running a wire for winch cause I am thinking the wife is giving me one for my birthday

did the gasket survive or did you have to go buy another for the second attempt??

I am finally done (also played with our new camper a little) just need to completely wash it and put platics back on, but now I am doing small wheelies on the grass and it is pretty sweet, I would do a new exhaust if I could stand the noise but I would definatly recomend a clutch kit to anyone that has a foreman.

Oh but I did notice that my spark plug is a little on the black side, should I mess with the carb? That makes me a little nervous

Good job on the clutch kit install. Just like Truegrit said to me while we were doing mine, this will be much easier to do the 2nd time around or if you help anyone else do one.

It will help me know what im doing when i install my gear reduction in a few months.

About the plug, Honda's run a lil rich from the factory. I wouldnt worry about it unless its hurting performance or making the motor run funny.

Hondas are generally rich from te factory, so I would sweat it too much.

Congrats on the clutch install, the block and tackle make lifting the bike a bit easier I am sure.


Why did you have to pul lit apart the second time.

(By the way in one of those pics it looks like your dog is squatting about to do its business.)

The dog is accutally looking for her tennis ball, Truegrit I did it a second time because I forgot to put on the e-clips and the plates after putting in the springs. Would it be wise to thin out the mixture a little or would the performance not increase much?
