CLIP AND MIXTURE SETTINGS

How is everyone set on air/fuel mixtures and the needle clip on there 500 with a hmf, k&N, and 170 jet. I am going to start playing with these two settings to get the best preformance out of her. just wondering if any has already done this and can save me some time. thanks

if its sputting at low cruising speeds, that means your jet is too big. i'd try stepping down just a hair. and for the popping on decel, turn the mixture screw out 1/4 at a time unitll it stops. its un burned fuel in the exhuast, so by leaning it out just a tad will clear that up. this is what i did to solve the exact same problem your having.

as for KAGRIFF, most guys are putting the clip on the 3rd notch and 2-2 1/2 turns out on the a/f screw

mike[/quote] I thought turning the mixture screw out richened the mixture?

your probably to rich. check your plug, you'll see.
I have checked the plug after a full throttle run and shut it down at full throttle and it is lean. have not made ant adjustments to the clip or air/fuel mix screw

If you're lean at top end wouldn't you want to step up in main size?

Have another question for ya. My 06 500ES is running great after I put in the 160 main, clip on #3 and 2.5 turns out. Only concern I have is that the plug is black around bottom of threads but grey in center. I talked with another person about this and he said it was close so just leave it alone. What does the plug tell you? Starts/idles and pulls real good throughout all throttle positions. Don't mean to steal your thread.
thats is actually real good eric. burning just about right. tan on the electrode, if it is white or real light grey you are a little lean. sound like you are real close.
i have a 172 in now. and i am real close. just plug shows a little lean and what to tweak it a little. would much rather be just a hint rich.
