I've done it now. Well, I got home a little early today and desided I would cut the grass. Well, something tore up in the trans so I had to load the lawn mower up on my trailer. I asked my neighbor to help me. We got the front wheels up but were having a time getting the rest up. Then I remembered about the winch. I pulled the ATV up to the side and set the cable using the pulley to make a change of direction. Well, I wasn't paying any attention to the cable and it went off to one side of the spool and jamed up. We got the lawn mower on then that's when I realized I had trouble. I tried to unlock it to free spool but all the lock would do is spin around freely. I was able to get the cable unjamed but I can only operate it by using the switch. What do I need to fix my winch?

I couldn't quickly find a parts breakdown on Promarks site but it should be the same as the Viper.

Essentially #20 the knob turns against #16 to push against #5 to let it free spool. You can take it apart on the machine (just 4 allen bolts) and inspect things. Possibly the shaft #5 is just stuck but if the knob spin all the way around it's probably broke.

1-
2- yeah, it spool jumped. It jam up between the spool and the motor.
3- knob spins all the way around freely.
Maybe I can play this off well and get a new viper winch, :happy.

Father's Day is Sunday...that's probably a good enough excuse to buy yourself a new winch.

Toodeap, is this something that can happen to any winch or is Glyde right about the Gorilla winch cheaply made?

Gorrila is cheaply made. I had a prob with my viper winch. The end of the steel cable has a lot of kinks in it and I couldn't get it to suck all the cable up. Was a easy fix 10 min a hammer to get sucked back in. Then cut 10 ft off the cable when i got home. Works like new again. Ordered the rope to permanently take care of the problem

It can happen to any winch but others have taken steps to help prevent the spool jumping. For example Viper uses a bigger bushing that fills the gap between the spool and the housings. I'm not a Promark fan at all, had bad luck with the products years ago and haven't seen a big change in them besides a name.

i had the 2500 lb promark and it was junk. wouldnt pull hard from the start. the viper i got is alot better. i tested the viper last Monday, hooked the winch cable to the angle iron on the front of the trailer. set the parking brake on the xmr and tried to drag the fourwheel but the trailer started to bend. the viper i a little slow under heavy loads but it never stopped pulling

No problem Tea. Yeah you definitely need to get a stronger winch. If you're in some thick mud, I would say 1500 lbs isn't going to be strong enough.
