Another winch question

I never even worry about it. Cable just goes where it wants.............no worries big daddy.

I wind mine like i would a baitcasting fishing reel.

One Important thing with a winch is to wind it TIGHT. Dont just let the winch pull the loose cable back in. Keep it under constant tension. WHenever you use it you need to re spool it by pulling the cable out (leave about 5 wraps on the drum) and winding it it. Put the cable on a tree or something (use a tree saver) and have the winch pull the quad all the way in. Give it some break to keep it really tight. Otherwise what happens is you get loose wraps and when you pull the cable will squeeze down inside them and get knotted up. If the pull is straight the cable will lay evenly on the drum.

*note this is personal experience mainly from truck winches but the ideas are all the same

Screw the "tree saver", but I do agree on spooling it tight.

Once you have on machine make sure to "stretch" the cable before using. Spool out and hook up to something solid, hold brakes when winding in.

Being new here I cant say much but can we atleast promote propper land care? Destroying trees doesnt help the sport when people say "they destroy live trees with their cable winches" They should be saying. "they dont harm any vegitation, leaving only tracks behind"

I agree 100%. With this type of behavior, no wonder a lot of parks don't let us ATV'rs ride there anymore.

It takes no more time to wrap a webbed strap around a tree to pull against than the winch cable. If you kill that tree by cutting it w/ the winch cable. it may not be there next time you need it. I am by no means a "tree hugger," but sometines we have to use our heads.

I end up tying my quad to a tree quite often, when I have to pull a Grizzly or Rhino out of a hole. This way you do not have to stress your drivetrain and the bike will not be drawn forward towards what you are winching out.

I'm going to get a tree saver of some kind. Like truegrit says you might need that tree again someday. I do think we need to help out as much as we can because our atv's do enough damage just riding on trails. So I don't think it would hurt to do a little extra to help out the trees etc!!

As for a bunch of LIBS I DON'T think so!!!
