one of my boots pulled out of the steel band, i didn't have a banding tool so i put a few squirts of grease in there and closed it up with a stainless steel pipe clamp...never had any problems yet..

as long as there is grease in there and not mud water, i think you will be okay.

once i get my bearings changed and everything working good, maybe you and kyle can come check out where we ride?
