Well, I had so much fun with my last recon project (look at avatar pic). That I picked up another. I paid $200 from my buddy that bought it from my other buddy.

Well, After I got all the mud/crap cleaned off and engine pulled/cleaned up.

Fuse is cut out and wires twisted (oh my..)

Rear stator cover is taken off (supposively stator went bad, I have 2 covers/2 stators, Duno which one is the 'good one'.

Whoever did the work looked like they worked in a gravel driveway, theres pieces of junk all over the flywheel...

The engine is out, I dont believe its swapped (havent turned it over or anything).

What can I do to 'check' to see if its any good without re installing and seeing what happens?

I have $200 in it, I think I can split the cases rebuild it and still be money ahead.

Going to put bolts/honda pop rivits back in plastics/bolt down racks, weld the bumper (broken). Maybe throw some armor all on it :)

Clean the motor out. Clean tank/petcock/carberator.

Still need tips on how to see if motor is any count.

And it has really nice tires on the back, probably new dirt devils!

Ok here are the pictures.

If anyone is parting a red square recon, I need a toolbox door/light/wire/And the top of the box that 'snaps' on. And a ignition switch/key, mines ripped off he lost the key hunting and just hotwired it

the only thing you can do is clean it up with brake clean or starting fluid ,put it back together fix the wires ,and try to start it then go from there

Talked with a few ridin' buddies today, they all said it ran good until it stopped charging? So they replaced the stator or something, and never got it done/got stuck couldnt figure it out? I dunno but at least 3 people said it was running about a month ago? So who knows, im taking the lil lady out tom. nite but later this week i'll flush it out for good measure and start reassembly! It has a BRAND new UNI air filter!

Gonna put new sparkplug/oil in it for good measure after I get it buttoned up/running.

Need:

Toolbox door (RED)
Toolbox lid (RED)
Ignition switch (he lost the key)

If anyone has any parts/parting out a recon, let me know! :) Thanks

Since you can do the work, sounds like it won't be a bad deal at all. At $200, you can afford to do anything to it in time. Good luck!

Yeah, I really enjoy tinkering with them. Im only 18 and senior in HS and (not to brag) know more about these lil 4wheelers than anyone else in our riding group/or at school. Maybe I should open my own shop..lol

More big updates later this week

Picked up a new spark plug tonite. Along with 2 cans of brake cleaner. (going to flush engine with some diesel to try to get the big stuff out, only 'stuff' in there is the misc junk from the PO working in the dang gravel driveway!! And it was never ran after he did the work)

Got the carb. torn down to clean it (not really dirty, but decided to anyway for good measure).

Stay tuned.

These parts came out when i took the case off (PO had it semi off already)

Am I missing antying (obviously the starter/flywheel etc is either still there/or big enough for me to notice lol)

Make sure when you flush the crankcase you don't use all diesel. You might be better off using maybe 1/2 quart of diesel and the balance using oil. If you do this, make sure the oil is the type to be used with a wet clutch. Diesel doesn't ''cut'' when it's cold either, so let the motor get hot to cut the sludge loose.

Well, for kicks I pulled the rear cover off, along with clutch cover, and topend.

I wanted to know if it was sunk/ran and wore the crankshaft or not. There is some EXTREMELY light wear on the piston (Maybe normal?)

I had the motor tiped on its front, so whatever was in the back went to the front etc.

Here are some pictures. I think im going to flush with clutch cover/stator cover and jug off for good measure. Then put it back together.

1-Can I reuse the old gasket (green paper).

2-Can I reuse the old topend gaskets

3-What should I flush with exactly.

I was glad the crank didnt have any play side to side. The piston looks pretty good, but could an expert (Toodeep maybe) give his/her opinion).

Thanks guys! Im excited but exhausted. Ive gotta get some oil reassemble/clean/flush everything and get the airbox/carb/engine back in and see what happens! :)

Hopefully nothings fried..(supposed electrical problems)

And can you guys see the pictures?

If I get it running i'll need an ignition switch, front bumper, rear axle (mines bent slightly) and some swingarm bearings and a lot of misc fastners.
well just let me know. i got 1 guy thats interested in the whole swinger assembly, but if he doesnt take it ill gladly let you got the axle out of it. the axle and both hubs are brand new. i bought them right before the engine grenaded and rode it maybe 2 or 3 times with the new axle. you let me know what you need and ill have it. ive got a whole quad minus the motor. for a long time i searched and searched for a new motor but i gave up on it. i figured i was going to have to take it to the junkyard to get anything out of it. but if you want parts id much rather see somebody else get use out of it moreso then it be taken to the scrap yard to be crushed

Im pretty sure the crud is just from the case comming off the back, then when I tipped it forward it slid forwards. I probably shouldnt have torn it down :)

So I need to order a topend gasket kit?
