Video of Issue

1997 Honda Foreman 400. Recently bought it, no idea about its history. Didn’t start or run. Here’s what I’ve done so far.

Cleaned the fuel tank and petcock
Fresh gas
New fuel lines
New inline fuel filter
New air filter
New motor oil and filter
New front and rear diff fluid
New spark plug gapped at .035
Rebuilt the carb and cleaned it twice

Ran like brand new again after this for a while, now suddenly it won’t. It fires right up and idles perfectly. Any attempt to throttle up, either just revving in neutral or trying to drive it, and it backfires, misses and dies. See video of inside of carb. No different with the airbox lid closed. No difference if I manually hold up the slider. Choke and butterflies operate properly. I’m out of ideas.

Update: Cleared the carbon out of the spark arrestor (not much) and reset the mixture screw to 2.5 turns. Tried several mixture adjustments to no avail. No changes. I did discover that if I manipulate the choke and throttle together, I can get it to rev up. Lots of backfiring though. Also a ton of gray smoke from the crankcase breather tubes.
