2013 Honda 420 4x4 automatic EFI. Bike has 56 hours on it and has been babied. Started running very rough, spitting and sputtering and would not stay running. I removed and cleaned the gas tank, cleaned the fuel pump and changed the fuel filter. The filter and pump housing was filthy. Filled with clean non ethynal gas. Ran great for 15 minutes. Stored the bike for 3 months. Tried to use it this weekend and started sputtering again. Changed the spark plug. No difference. It idles somewhat okay but sputters when increasing RPM's. Thinking fuel injection issue.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Stored the bike for 3 months.
Use ethanol free fuel. Ethanol gas does not store well at all. It is hydroscopic and will absorb moisture.

Get some good clean ethanol free gas in there and see if it clears up.

That's the cheap, easy way to start off troubleshooting.

Thanks. All of the above has been done. Yesterday I put Seafaom in tank and ran for 20 minutes. Took the bike out today, still running rough and sputtering. Now, it bogs down and stops running when the engine gets hot as if its starving for fuel. I live in Lousiana. It's hot here. I let it sit for 15/20 minutes and it starts and runs for 100 yards or so then bogs down again. Same scinario. When the engine is cool it runs. When the engine gets hot it bogs down. I went through this 4 times today just to get it back to my truck.
Once again, any input is appreciated.

My 08 Rancher is doing the same. I'm looking at fuel filter (I just replaced it), fuel pump (these 420 pumps are notorious for going out/overheating and giving symptoms described) and I've also seen people say the fuel pump relay back by the ECU can go bad and not work well once everything warms up (joints in relay expand with heat, and no longer make a good connection).

I'm going to try swapping the fuel pump relay from the wife's 420 to this 08, and if that doesn't work, I'll pull the fuel pump apart and check the filter. If the filter looks good I'll probably replace the fuel pump.

The fuel pumps in these 420's apparently don't handle sitting up well. Gas now is crap and any gunk in these pumps causes them to fail. I'd look at your relay first, then your filter, then your pump.

the same varnish like coating that forms on carbs when ethanol fuel sits in the for a long time, can also do the same to EFI parts, sadly there NOT as easy to clean as a carb is!
I too think change fuel lines and
start running some sort of EFI cleaner thru your system, and check filter as jeep said

name of the game when you don't use things much of prep fuel for sitting!, just poor quality fuel being used today, as most of it is made to be used FAST and NOT sit!

I replaced my petcock and it seems to have fixed my issue. That said, when mine was sputtering it was 95 degrees out, and when I test rode it the other day it was in the low 80's. If it was an iffy fuel pump or fuel injection relay it might not show symptoms unless it's hot out.

Old petcock was gooped up pretty good, so I think it wasn't letting enough fuel flow.

Well I'm back. Fresh off a trip to Lambeau Field to watch my tigers spit and sputter against UW the way my bike was doing. Other than the loss the trip was awesome. Great fans, incredible venue. A real bucket list trip.
Now, let me update you on my bike. There were two issues. Spitting/Sputtering and bogging down when the engine got hot. In addition to the work I did above, this morning I jumped back on it.
1st I changed the fuel pump. This took care of the bogging down when the bike got hot. Still had issues with spitting/sputtering. I removed the hose off the petcock and was barely getting a drip of fuel. I took the petcock off and cleaned the **** out of it. It was in bad shape. Very gummie and clogged.(Thanks Jeepwm69). If anyone is having this problem I recommend cleaning every inch of the fuel system (fuel tank, pump, hoses, petcock and fuel injector) before changing parts. Then use good gas and and a stabilizer.

Thanks to all that gave input. Now I'm off to the woods to hang deer stands.

I am having the same problem now same as last week and last week it was running rough and I put some injector cleaner in it and rode all weekend and when I got on it today the fuel was kinda low and wasn’t running right so I put new gas in there and it’s still doing the same exact thing what could be the issue?
