I have a 2002 honda foreman rubicon 500 that I bought yesterday. It runs fine. But earlier today i had it on a incline facing down and I turned it off and then is started rolling down the hill(going forwards) and making a whining sounds so i put it in neutral and let it coast down the hill and then i let it sat there while i was doing somthing. I turned it on and put it in gear and it wouldn’t move in any of the gears and it was making a loud whining noise on the left side of the quad (while your sitting on it). Any ideas what would the problem be?

On the left side of the engine is the shift motor. It's a small electric motor that looks similar to the electric starter. With my Rubicon it got stuck and wouldn't shift, mind you it still had drive but was stuck in one gear. Did you notice any fault codes (blinking) on the gauge? Is there any difference if you change to ESP shifting?

Thank you but it was the oil pump chain.

OK, good to know. I've heard of that issue as well. Turns out my Rubicon suffered from a Hondamatic failure before I owned it and I replaced the entire, costly assembly. The first couple of years (2001 +) had oil pumps that caused the failure. Hopefully yours will perform ok from now on!
