OK-Lots of general info on internet, BUT nothing in particular for my Honda Rancher. The 2002 model has an extension of the petcock valve which sticks out about four inches through a bracket which holds the switch for the valve stationary. I got that off and apparently the extension, or lever, is attached with some sort of screw through the hollow extension at the petcock itself. Not sure what type screw/bolt it is, but hopefully I'll be able to get it off. Supposedly, the petcock is held in place by two bolts, but there is a flange, or guard molded into the gas tank and I can't even find room in there to get a ratchet straight up into the gas tank IF I get the switch lever off. I am no mechanic, so if I have to remove the gas tank to do this I am probably screwed as right now work done by the Honda shop is out of the budget. Thoughts, help, advice please. :confused

Should be a phillips screw, you unscrew it and pull that switch/extension off (it only fits on one way). Disconnect the tank and flip it over to change the petcock. While you're at it, drain all the old gas & related gunk that has been stored in there for the last 17 years.

Dirt will build up in there so compressed air and tapping on the screw driver is usually needed to get it worked in. Why are you removing the petcock?

Because it leaks. It started leaking and I could just turn the petcock off to stop it when through riding. It gradually got worse and even when turned to the off position it dripped until the tank was empty ...
