I have the same quad that came to me with a failed Hondamatic. There was no way to shift gears using buttons & if the transmission is bad it acted like it was in high gear - the engine could barely turn the wheels (even when off the ground). Couldn't hurt to assemble it and find out but chances are you'll need to replace the trans.

The switch changes the way the automatic shifts gears. D1 is for normal use, D2 for when it's slippery/icy & esp is for manual shifting with the up/down buttons. If you are doing snow plowing, or under a heavy load like towing, then low range is recommended. For normal riding, high range & D1 is correct.
