03 Rubi Two Problems Help!!

1862 Views 5 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  BIGBADBOB
My Rubi has 4000km mostly trouble free. But now I have two problems.
1: quite often it will not start in gear, it will turn over but no start. Starts fine in 'N'
2: on a hill in low and coasting down the transmission kinda growls or grinds ratcheting sound it goes away under power and returns under decelaration not the nomal whine the trans makes. I have checked the shifter adjustment and it is all to specs. The rest of the machine runs great.
Any ideas?
TIA

Bob, I believe I have a similar problem. See "tranny or axle" last post was Thurs July 12th. When slowing down a hill or under hard decel from about 10 to 8 mph my 02 Rubi makes this noise. I have not checked in low range to see if it does it there. I know it will do it in D1, D2 and ESP although ESP is not as bad. I can stop the grinding from happening if I keep a slight throttle pressure. I'm not sure if it is the tranny or clutch but have eliminated the front axle as a possibility. Please post what you find. Thanks, Joe
Thanks for the info.
Mine only does it in 'L' and not always.
I will have to try it with the 424 disengaged to see if it changes anything.

Here is an update. The wife mostly rides the Rubi so I had to take it away to test it.
The grinding/ratcheting noise happens when you are going up a steep hill and then coast backward. Or going up a steep hill in reverse and let it coast forward, in the reverse it seems to go for a bit then freewheel. Maybe the hondamatic does this by design.
The rubi will turn over in reverse but will not start, it will start intermittently in D,L. I checked/cleaned the reverse switch, checked the shifter drain for water found none.
The service manual does not cover this at all.
Any more help out there.
