No Key - What to Do?

Hi all,

Looking at getting myself a ‘98 Recon 250. Seems to be in decent condition, except strangely the starter solenoid was removed, and it had no spark plug. This thing has been sitting behind someone’s shed for years. Actually two of them. Covered in dust. Guess I have a parts donor if needed. Installed a spark plug and reinstalled the solenoid but I don’t have they key to see if it even works. I realize I can jump the posts on the solenoid, but this doesn’t allow the ignition coil to provide spark, does it? Looks like the ignition has been messed with before with a screwdriver. Would this work? Not looking to tear the thing apart just to get it going if possible. Really don’t care if I damage the lock cylinder because I don’t think they key will ever be found. Are they keys universal? And if so, can someone link me to the correct one?

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum.

Just go on ebay and order a new key switch. The keys are not universal, and if someone has taken a screwdriver to yours it needs to be replaced anyway.

Hope it wasn't stolen. Does the seller have titles for the bikes?

Oh no, they’re not stolen. Buying it from a long time friend, He bought them new in ‘98 for his two boys. They’ve just been sitting for so long since they were outgrown that the keys have been misplaced. Actually cut the key switch off and found that tying the black and red wires together was the solution. Neutral light came on and she even fired up fairly quickly with a little help from starting fluid. Had to tap on the starter to get it spinning but it hasn’t quit yet. Ordered a new switch on eBay yesterday. She won’t run without starting fluid in the intake though. If I choke it, it’ll run at extremely low idle for a short time and die. Pulling carb off today as I’m sure jets are full of varnish.

Look on ebay for a carb.

Try to find an original Honda carb. I haven’t had any luck with those “will fit” carbs for $49 off eBay and Amazon. The Honda carb will be easier to rebuild, and will tune much easier for idle, etc. and once a Honda carb is cleaned and rebuilt properly, it’s as good as a new one. Again, In My Opinion.
