Keeps dying...

Hey guys I'm new here and I have a 2004 rubicon 500. This bike was running perfect last year for hunting season and riding but this year after hunting season the battery died so I went and bought a new one( I had the old one for a while so I thought it was normal) but after I bought it I went riding durning the winter and about a month later the battery died again. And before I put the new one on I charged it up. So I went and returned it for a new one then about one or two months later the same thing happened. What is wrong with it and how much will it be to fix it? Thanks!

Is there magnetos or alternator on that quad? Sounds like that's what's going on your machine.

modern atv's use Power when NOT in use, so, if your letting this atv sit for long periods, say a few months or so, its could just be killing your battery from the drain of electronic on it
its WHY folks highly recommend using a battery tender/maintainer
using one will keep the battery at full charge while it sits and make your battery last longer than NOT using one. there cheap too, wally world sells them, you just need to have power where you store your atv

YOU could also have a short some place draining power, or your charging system isn't correct
But I am guessing its just draining from time going by NOT being used by the description of your tread!
we have this issue at my hunting camp, every time we get there atv battery's were dead, some times in a few weeks?
we didn't have power there, so, we started to take battery's home or leave in the camp house on a tender!
works for us! sucks, but, thats modern atv's for you with all the fancy electronic's folks seem to love??

how long do you let it sit between rides? anything more then about a week in cold temps you should put a battery tender on it.

Look into a Earth X battery. They are lithium and have a anti drain feature. I havent ran one myself, but I know of guys who are really happy with them.

The problem isn't really IMO, the battery it self going dead from temps, its the fact the ATV is actually drawing power from it when not in use, for computer, clock and crap. The older non electronic atv's at camp can sit for months and be just fine battery, yet the new ones with all the electronic will suck a battery dead in no time, just cause the design of how they use power, sitting so a lithium battery I doubt would help any, if it sits non use a lot

Garage
Welcome to the forum @Ethan21. Have you tested your charging system. With a good battery (charged) and the machine running it should be putting out 13-14 volts. If it isn't then you have a charging system issue, if it is then it's a storage problem most likely.
