When I lost first gear at 200 miles.. it started out grinding first when I'd be in nasty mud and progressively got worse till it totally ground the "DOGS" (engagement teeth) away.
I didn't fix it...

The one-way bearing on the fly wheel (starter/gear) will "squeel" when it is going bad.
Also it usually will afect the engine braking, causing intermitant coasting when you let off the throttle.
