I got to thinking..... I haven't seen a thread for the people who have never changed their oil.

Well, here you go.
Hopefully this helps someone....

One other thing that is important, and you don't want to find out the hard way, the sealing washer that goes on the drain plug should be replaced regularly. Every oil change in fact, as it is crushes when you tighten the plug, and helps to keep the plug tight wihtout over torquing. There is a thread or two on here about the results of over-torquiung the drain plug in these machines with the half-thread bung. If it breaks, you get to spilt the case...

Personally, I dislike the use of a torque wrench on the oil plug also. I prefer a small T-handle and gentle pressure. Same with the filter cover. I use only gentle pressure. If it leaks, it is too loose B). If you go too tight, well, it's aluminum...

I don't have anything against torque wrenches as such. But the low-torque ones are easy to miss the "click" on, and they have handles that can apply way too much torque for these applications. If you use then, just be very careful and precise.

Nice thread SS. Sometimes the manual write-up are a little less than clear. Pictures are great.

Thanks guys. I never use a torque wrench but then again i understand the fine art of wrenching.

This is kinda for the newbie's...

Great "How To" SS, only a mild mistake or typeo.

the '05-'11 Foremans 500's use 2.6 qts of oil...not like it's going to hurt anything, ......just something I noticed.

i looked right in my old 2007 owners manual for that.

like you said; not like it's going to hurt anything.

where did you find that at??

Owners Manual 2.5, .....says nothing about a filter

Service Manual 2.6, .....says with filter change

As I said...Honda Type-o, which is cool by me I learned something New.

but like everything else Common Sense would dictate, run the Machine a short time and recheck it & look for oil leaks, I also like to recheck after a short run down the street/Trail and look for leaks again. (personal preference)..............all in all a Great (how to) needs to be a sticky!

I forgot to mention something in my original posting.

I prefer to have my machine warmed up before i change the oil

1-cigarette+1-beer= a warmed up machine and ready to drain oil

No problem guys

your welcome. glad to help.

Good post...and I'm not being picky... honest!
But I didn't see mention of the first use of the 17mm socket ...
(the oil drain plug removal, and primary oil draining)... only the oil drain plug replacement and discussion of torque requirements.

Needed another smoke and beveridge... I'll buy.

SS......many would not care, some might.

but I'm just a pick fker, I stick aluminum foil under the filter to catch the excess oil coming out of there when I change the filter.

WHY: simpler to see if there are any leaks, if ya don't have oil everywhere..Better safe than sorry.

Now that we are on the changing oil subject, right as I hit 100 miles on my odometer today, the oil change indicator came on. I know the manual says 100 miles and the first should be quick but dangggg, only had it three days.
So do I ride out for a Lil while or change ASAP?

I would change it.

Think of it as break in oil and Remember Oil is the life Blood of a engine!

Thats what we are all here for!

Controversial.... Rotella T6 synthetic.
Synthetic diesel oil, rated as required.... super.
Wheres pics of the sporty? B)

Thanks for the most helpful post! I'll be doing my 1st oil change on my new quad in the next couple weeks. I am at about 40 miles.

Welcome to the site!

if it's a 400-500 sure......I just use a "Short" Handled 1/4 rachet so I can FEEL when it tightens up

the one gets broken the most is the drain plug.......the way it's made it's a wonder that all of them don't strip out!

(or they casted it to have thin walls)

don't worry about hijacking this thread. :)

i never use a torque wrench when tightening up the drain bolt but i've done a few and use my elbow torque wrench.
a torque wrench is never a bad idea.

You don't have to change the air filter. Clean it with soapy warm water, dry it. Then get some foam filter spray and lightly coat it.

As for oil filters, the foremans all take the same filter, along with the rancher 350,420. The Rubicon takes a different filter though
