The 420AT has a manual (gear to gear) transmission but it is an auto shift. The 400AT has the hydrostatic type transmission and IMO was gear too high and needed a low range. Back to the newer 420AT it uses technology off of the Rincon to do the shifting and so far has been pretty trouble free. I wouldn't be scared to get a 420AT but if your planning on bigger tires (27+) plan on a gear reduction for that also (they are gear higher than the manual shift).
