Default newbie needed cam chain tensioner help!!!

well guys new on here but have posted some replies to other peoples threads. Thanks to WImoeron he helped me post my own thread, sounds dumb dont it. Now that I can post my own I have what might sound like a dumb question! First off I have a 2003 Foreman 450S. Rebuilt top end in the spring. It is bored 40 over and Wiseco piston installed new valve guides, valves, valve springs, keepers and etc. Well 2 weeks ago it backfired while on a ride and then wouldnt barely run popping back through the carb. Pretty much knew what it was but just wanted to rule out the carb so pulled off and cleaned. No change so I pulled front cover off and immediately seen the problem, CAM CHAIN! I read alot of usefull info on here before I tackled on my own. Install of new chain was fairly easy. My only concern is when I purchased the cam chain from my local Honda dealer one of the techs had told me that as long as the tensioner had some play and it wasnt stuck it was fine. Well after looking at bowties impressive thread with all the pics his tensioner is way farther out than mine. Mine only moves maybe a quarter of an inch and wasnt quite holding what I thought was enough tension to the chain. Called the tech up and his reply was once the engine fired off and the combination of oil pressure and the chain rotating on the sprocket I was good. Just would like some you guys input, because of just what I read from some of the threads on here yall know your stuff! Any feedback on this is greatly appreciated. I actually rode the machine Sunday runs great no noise in front cover as before and plenty of power but gonna hold riding any further until I feel confident that its not gonna create any further damage. Have to much in it to destroy it. gonna get my profile updated with some pics of my quads but just havent had time. Thanks

Welcome. Did the tensioner spring back by itself when you retracted it with a screwdriver and removed the screwdriver?

Sounds like maybe the spring itself could be broke in two not allowing it to operate at its full potential, welcome to the forum atvjunky.
