I'd been looking for a new hobby in April and decided to get a used ATV. First one was a bad choice although I'd taken a friend along I thought new enough. It was a 2003 Foreman 500 ES that needed way more work than I had time or money to deal with. Finally got some help reselling it and found one right after but needed time to go check it out in person today. I'll be picking up a 2004 Foreman 450 S on Sunday. I got another yellow one! He has 27" mudlights on ITPs, snorkeled, audio tube, 2" lift, and a few other goodies. It was ridden by another female that babied it and everything looks/sounds good. Now all I need are a few more people that want to go out to Crosby or other areas on the weekends so I can get down n dirty! Also looking for general info on how to ride safely, etc. so any tips would be great.

Welcome to the forum. As far as tips on riding you have to feel the machine out and never trust it, it's just like a horse and will buck you off any time your not paying attention (except your in control of everything). Once you get to know your machine and your capabilities it will be a great combination. Please leave any alcohol out of it when learning the machine, it is just stupid courage that will get you hurt.
You'll have to learn how the machine handles on different types of terrain. you'll have to learn when to give it throttle and when to let off in different terrains. There are just to many things to explain that just is human nature when it comes to riding. Like I said before, get to know the machine and it will treat you well. |

Welcome Aboard! Toodeep pretty much covered it. Ive been riding with my dad (him on my rubi, and me on the recon), and hes been getting used to it never riding a quad before mine. The first time we went out I took him on pretty much the same trails I normally go on but I was avoiding the real hairy spots, but it was still some rough terain. Having never been on a quad he was wanting to put his foot down when it got off camber but I told him, that quads been on this trail 100 times and it will ride right through the stuff. Like toodeep said get comfortable with the machine and learn what it can and can not do. My ol mans got it down now and he actually enjoys it! However I get stuck on the little quad but ohh well atleast we're both having fun!
One last thing..... If you're just getting used to the machine I would advise wearing until you know your machine. Even though I dont wear one, its a good thing to always wear.

TXTee ![]() It's refreshing to read someone new to the sport has a safety concern ![]() Check here and see if there is something close to your area I took the course after having rode for five years, then when I bought a new ATV they paid for the class and I wish I had taken it sooner. ATV Safety Institute I've rode bikes, snowmobiles since I was five and got my first ATV at 32 and thought I knew everything ![]() The little things that I learned surprised me the most and still use them today ![]() One other thing I'd like to mention is getting in the habit of doing a Pre-Ride inspection I've rode with buddiesthat have had a brand new machine and had some issues that could have been avoided if they would have just taken the time to look things over ![]() Again, Welcome and enjoy the New Adventures !

Welcome to the Red Machine from East Tennessee......Tee!
I'm some what of a newbie to Quads only been riding about 1-1/2 years before that it had been back in the 70's since I had been off road for any amount of time. but been riding Motorcycles about all my life just Put on 100 Miles on my Old Shovelhead today took Lisa (My fiancee riding) when I began, I took the Riders Safety Course and learned quite of stuff that was very useful in the woods, Ive also read everything and anything I could find about my Quad, to learn more about the operation and mechanic's of the Machine, they more you are Educated about how it works, the more your going to be when something Go's South.....and its going to happen, break downs are part of it! Something we have done in the past year it put together some of the things you might need during a break down or emergency....things like , Tools, tire plugs, air pump, Winch, Towrope, First Aid Kit ,Extra Clothing, Food,Water.....just common sense stuff! as we ride WAY back in the Mountains, the area's you might be riding might not require these extremes but you never know! anyways...Best of Luck to you and we all hope to see those Photos of the new Quad.....as its Mandatory you know the fine writing that you didnt read when you joined, maybe you can chit-chat with Lisa sometime shes a Great lady and...as Smokey will tell you...she's a tough ole'bird & Loves to Ride! before I finish this VERY long post.....DO NOT ALLOW anybody to badger you into riding anyplace you do not feel safe, its not worth it and theirs another trail around the bend, you can always come back it that area at a later date......as I said NONE of this stuff is worth getting hurt over........ride at your own pace! Respects & Good Luck Glide & Lisa |
