New guy with a broken quad

What's up everyone? Just joined the forum, as I recently picked up an '03 Rancher 350 ES. Only downside, is it's broken! It's stuck in reverse right now and won't change gears at all. Hoping to learn more about it and get it back in good condition using this forum.

Welcome to the forum. It won't shift manually or with the buttons? Sounds like a cracked shift plate under the front engine cover.

Correct. I couldn't get it to shift out of reverse at all, either electrically or mechanically.

The battery in it is shot, so that will get replaced. The dash lights did come on when I hooked the charger up, but the display did not. I threw a wrench on the emergency shifter and couldn't get it to shift at all. The shift motor looks almost brand new (previous owner claimed to have replaced it). When the dash lights did come on, it flashed 3 times, signalling it's a angle sensor problem; but I don't think that would keep it from shifting with the emergency shifter.

I think it's a cracked plate as well. My only problem is, I'm not 100% sure what plate everyone is talking about. In a parts diagram, the only "plate" I could find was a bearing plate (P/N 24656-HN5-670). Are they referring to this or something different? The gearshift arm, perhaps? (P/N 24620-HN5-M00)

I'm planning to slowly tear it down; most of the work will be done on my off-weekends, so it will be a drawn out process. But, for the price I paid, I'm willing to put in the effort and parts to get it running again

Yea it's the gearshift arm. I get use to calling it a plate because of the 450.

Any comments on converting it to a manual shift?

I would overwhelmingly suggest doing so.

On the 350 Ranchers the ES transmissions are exactly the same as the footshifts. On my neighbors 350ES I simply replaced the hex head shift spindle with a footshift splined shift spindle and footshifter (ebay) and removed the reduction gears under the shift motor (left the shift motor in place so keep the front cover sealed up).

Shifts just like a footshift model, runs great, and no electronic crap to mess up.

I'm not sure how the meter will react to this though. His was broken and had a short that was draining the battery so I unplugged it completely.

I just picked up an 05 ES that I will also convert to footshift, and it has a working meter so whenever I get around to doing it we will see how the meter reacts. I'm worried that the gear indicator will blink error codes instead of showing the gear but would rather have that than all the other issues that come with the ES machines.
