Default How to repair a slipping shifter

I''ve been reading a lot of threads about problems with shifters slipping on the shaft. If the splines on the shaft are not completely stripped....
(1)remove the shifter
(2)use a chop saw or grinder with about a 3/16 blade and open up the gap on the shifter, this will allow it to squeese tighter on the shaft
(3) if the threads are stripped where the bolt goes, drill it out with a 1/4" bit and replace METRIC bolt with a 1/4'' grade 8 bolt and NUT
(4) replace shifter and install new bolt and NUT

Got to do this to mine as the shifter slipped when I first looked at it.

Every one I have ever seen has been fixed by welding it up. I'd sooner pull it all apart and replace the shifter shaft, and shifter if need be. I like projects.
