If the gas that's in the tank now is old, get rid of it and add fresh gasoline. Try the easiest approach first and add some Seafoam to the tank and run it through. That should cut the varnish and hopefully clean the carb without having to take it off and clean.

I know the thread is a few weeks old, but I echo what Andamo says, Seafoam is some good stuff. There is also a filter in the tank on the petcock valve, if the bike sat up for several months or the filter has never been changed, it could have deteriorated and will cause problems as well. The Recon I am working on now sat for quite a while as well and that tank filter was SHOT!

I'm having some of the same problem as the OP. I have tried just about everything you have suggested. The carb has been thoroughly cleaned, tank cleaned, inline filter added, fresh gas. When I got out to the mud pits this weekend, it would only run on choke. I was in really soupy, nasty stuff but even on dry land it would die immediately when the choke was released. I know very little about working on them so I need it to be dumbed down as much as possible. My mechanic said I would prob need to play with the idle and a little gold piece at the bottom of the carb a little to make it run perfect. Any ideas?
