Default Recon runs rough...

I have a 05' recon ES that when you get the machine warmed up and after you let off the throttle from revving it up, the RPM's will not come back down to idle. Its nothing to do with the throttle cable. Its not a high rev, but just enough that the recon will not shift into gear. Eventually it will come back down..... And then another problem I ran into tonight was on the way home the recon would keep dying on me. I had to run it at half choke to get home. It kept sputtering. Any ideas for these two problems?

It sounds like the carb is dirty or some sort of blockage. Check and clean the filter and get some Seafoam into the tank. If that doesn't work, it's time to pull the carb and do a rebuild.

sounds like a carb cleaning is due...especially if you have to choke it to keep it running...as for the idle, somebody(at some point) probably adjusted the idle up just to keep it running(because the carb is filthy), and if it idles to high, then shifting will be difficult.

Do an ebay search for your year, sometimes it's more cost effective to throw on a new carb.

are the aftermarket carbs on ebay just as good as OEM? Also, can I just toss the new carb on with no adjustments? I don't understand the carb thing too well. The idle is not turned up because when its cold, or just sitting there it will idle good. Its just when you hit the throttle and let off the rpms will stay at a high idle then drop off after a few seconds.

I put an ebay carb on a friends recon and it fired right up, no adjustments. His boy is running the wheels off of it (really needs to learn when to shift though).

The recon had sat in a backyard for almost a year and he got a good deal. The carb was gummed up pretty bad.

Welcome dude !!! If I were you I would check the tank filter and see what kinda gas floe you have before you rip into the carb ,and if you never rebuilt one before you might want to take it to a professional !!! Just my two cents !!!!

It is really easy to clean and rebuild the carb any monkey can do it. Just watch and remember how it came apart. I use seafoam and put all the parts into a ziplock and soak it in seafoam overnight. Then I use compressed air and blow everything out. It will only take about an hour to disassemble and about an hour to put it back together. The first time I cleaned a carb I had to take it apart and clean it 3 times to get it good and clean. Remember to take your time and clean it really good!

Here is a link for a carb on ebay

I would much rather clean it and learn the process then to buy a new carb everytime it needed to be cleaned. Good luck.

You don't know what you're buying what some of the folks on eBay are selling. Parts and pieces might be missing and you've then wasted money and time. If you're going to have anything mechanical, you better learn to try and repair it yourself. Man built the part and man should be able to repair it. Take yours apart and even take pics as you're doing it. Don't hurry and look and learn in the process. There is nothing more satisfying than ripping something apart and putting it back together and having it work right.
