Default Gear Oil Specifications

Hey guys. I'm trying to do a little preventative maintenance here and I got to thinking about the rear end gear oil. Its got a little tag that says to use Hypoid or something like that. But how much gear oil is used in the rear end? and whats a good brand to use? Thanks in advance for the help guys!

Awesome! Thanks. Yeah, I've had the fourwheeler for years and the gear oil has never been changed. I actually just found a big jug of generic 80W90 Hypoid Gear oil down in my shop so I'll use that. Thanks for the link.

Just for future reference to anyone else that needs to know, its 3.0 US oz. How to measure how much needs to go in, I've yet to figure out.

You really don't want to do it that way. If you add gear oil till it comes out the top and then cap it up, you're asking for trouble. Once the gear oil gets hot it'll expand and push out seals. Go to the drug store or a place that sells paint and look for plastic cups that have liquid calibrations on the sides of them. Put your 3 ozs. of gear oil in them and then pour it into the rear end. If the gear oil is too thick, use a hair dryer to warm it up so it flows better.

I got it under control. Definitely didn't fill it till it overflowed. I got a measuring cup that had oz. on it and filled it up with water. I cut a plastic water bottle in half and put the 3 oz. in the water bottle and marked where it came up to. I then dried out the cut water bottle, filled it to the mark with 80w90 Hypoid gear oil, and filled up the rear end (of course after I drained the other 3 oz.).
